For a 575W card the noise is remarkable. Nothing at all at the desktop, and under a full load the fans sit around 1150rpm which disappears behind the case fans. A power limit of 80 per cent costs about four per cent performance and takes another eight degrees off it.

Two contradictory things are true about this card and I have gone back and forth on the rating for weeks. The first is that it is magnificent. 4K at maximum settings with path tracing is simply not a problem, the 32GB across a 512-bit bus means nothing I do ever runs short, and the cooler holds it at 64C while staying quieter than the 4080 it replaced. The engineering is not in question. The second is that it costs more than a decent second hand car, and the difference on my 4K 144Hz panel against a 5080 at a third of the price is real but nothing like three times. Add the wider case, the new power supply and the native cable and you are well past six thousand pounds for a graphics card. Three stars is a judgement on that arithmetic, not on the hardware, which would be five.

Card is exceptional and I have no criticism of it, but do yourself a favour and buy the proper cable for your PSU. The included adapter is a fistful of octopus that will not bend inside a normal case and I was not comfortable forcing it.

Runs a 4K 240Hz panel and a second monitor for work, and nothing has come close to troubling it. The 32GB matters more for the video projects than the games, where timelines that used to need proxies now scrub natively. Thermals are the quiet achievement here, with the core in the low sixties under an eight hour render and no clock drop at all. It has been completely stable on every driver release so far.

Under a sustained 4K load the core sits at 63C and the hotspot at 74C, which is a delta most cards would be proud of at half the power. Fans hold around 1100rpm to do it. The trade is width, because it covers four slots and my capture card had to come out to make room! Five months in and the numbers have not drifted at all.

Not the experience I expected at this money. With a 4K 240Hz panel and a 1440p 60Hz second screen the display driver has crashed and recovered eleven times so far, always on the desktop and never in a game. Setting both to the same refresh rate stops it, which is not really a solution when the whole point of two monitors is that they are different. Clean installs and three driver versions have not fixed it. The hardware is clearly capable and the cooler is superb, but two stars is where a fault this basic lands.
