Fourth ThinkPad in a row and the reason is always the same. The keyboard has proper travel, the layout has not been messed about with, and the TrackPoint means my hands never leave the home row. Everything else is a bonus. A year on it has been carried to three offices, dropped once from chair height onto carpet, and it still opens flat and stays where you put it. Nothing rattles, nothing creaks. The charger is the only mark against it. It is a proper brick, much bigger than the thickness of the machine suggests it should need, and on days when I know I will be near a socket I leave it and charge over USB-C instead.

Specified this over a heavier workstation because it had to travel, and the compromise has been almost entirely worth it. It does the same modelling work, it fits in a normal bag, and the whole load with the charger is under 2.5 kilos. The compromise shows on long jobs. A rendering run that goes past half an hour warms the left of the palm rest to the point where I move my hand, and the fans settle into a constant rush that a quieter room would notice. It never throttles, so the heat is going where it should, it is just going through the case on the way. Otherwise it is exactly what I wanted. The keyboard is superb, the matte screen works anywhere, the ports mean no dongles, and it has taken a lot of travel without picking up a scratch.

Moved off a MacBook after a very long stretch and expected to hate the transition, and the honest answer is that I do not miss it. The matte screen alone is worth the change, since I can sit facing a window without a mirror where my document should be. Performance is not the story here, though it is quick, it is the ergonomics. The keyboard has travel you can actually feel, the ports mean nothing needs an adapter, and the hinge opens with one hand. Little things, and they add up to a machine you stop thinking about. Battery is the one place the MacBook was clearly ahead. This gets me through most of a working day if I am writing and reading, but a heavy afternoon of builds and calls and it wants the charger by four. The fans are audible then too, a low rush rather than a whine.

As an everyday machine it is close to perfect. Writing, mail, browsers with too many tabs, all of it in complete silence and with the underside cool enough for actual lap use, which most 16 inch machines cannot claim. Push it and the character changes fast. The fan curve seems to have two settings, off and quite loud, and the jump between them is abrupt enough to break concentration. A gradual ramp would be a better experience even if the peak were the same. Five months in that is the only thing I would change. Battery does a full working day of light use, half of one if anything is compiling, which is about what I expected from this class of machine.

One thing that never gets mentioned in reviews is that you can open it. Five screws, a panel off, and a second drive was in without any drama or any risk of breaking a clip. Try that on most machines at this price! The speakers are the obvious cost cut. Fine for a call, unpleasant for anything else, and I keep a small speaker in the bag for hotel rooms.
