Wants a board with decent VRM cooling
Bought it as the last upgrade this AM5 board will need, and that has proven right. Nothing I play at 1440p is anywhere near CPU limited any more. The only thing I would flag is the power delivery expectation, my old B650 board ran the VRM hotter than I liked until I improved case airflow.

Export and render times barely moved over my old twelve core
Roughly sixteen months in, used for gaming five nights a week and video work at weekends, so I have a decent sense of where it shines and where it does not. For games it is still the part I would buy. The cache gives you a floor under your frame times that no amount of clock speed does, and in the strategy titles I put the most hours into the difference against my old 12700K is not subtle. Idle sits at 40 with a tower cooler, load rarely goes past 75. Where it is only a four star part for me is everything else. Eight cores is eight cores, and my export times barely moved from the chip it replaced. If your machine does more than play games you are paying a premium for cache you will not use half the time. Know which side of that line you are on before you spend the money.

Gaming most evenings and a fair bit of compiling during the day, and I have not once wished for more than eight cores. The thing worth saying to anyone comparing this against a twelve or sixteen core part is that for gaming the cache matters far more than the core count. At 1440p I am GPU limited in almost everything, and in the handful of titles that are not, this chip holds frame times flatter than anything I have owned. Simulation titles are the obvious winners, but even something like Baldur's Gate in a busy city stopped stuttering entirely. Thermally, fifteen months in, it is well behaved if you feed it a proper cooler. Mine sits at 45 idle and peaks around 78 under a long render, on a 240 AIO in a case with two intakes. Quiet with it, too.

The first thing that struck me was how little heat it makes compared to the 13700K it replaced. Same cooler, same case, and the fans no longer ramp when I load a big project. Gaming performance is the headline of course, and in the two flight sims I use it has taken the stutter out of dense scenery entirely. One warning for anyone coming from Intel: the AM5 socket has pins in the board, not the chip, so take your time seating it. Only three weeks in, but nothing so far suggests I will be writing a different review later.

No cooler supplied
Dropped it into an X870 board, enabled EXPO, and that was the whole afternoon. Games that used to hitch in built up areas now just run. No cooler in the box, mind.

Under a 360 AIO this thing lands exactly where the reviews said it would. Gaming is where the extra cache shows itself, my 1% lows in Flight Sim and Tarkov steadied up in a way no memory tuning ever managed on the 5800X. It idles around 38 and sits in the low seventies under an all core load, which for an eight core part pulling this little from the wall is genuinely impressive. A year and a bit of that now, and the temperatures have if anything settled a degree or two since it was new.

My honest summary is that it made my graphics card the problem again, which is exactly what you want from a CPU upgrade. Everything I play at 1440p now runs into the GPU wall rather than the processor. The 1% lows are the number that changed most, up by a third in the two open world games I measured before and after. It runs cool enough on a mid range air cooler that I have never heard it, and the integrated Radeon meant I could get the machine posting and updated before the graphics card even arrived! Nine months of that and the only maintenance has been blowing the dust out of the cooler.

Upgraded from a 5600X and the jump in the games I actually play has been bigger than the benchmark charts suggested. Anno and Stellaris late game turns are roughly half what they were, and the 3D cache is clearly doing the heavy lifting there rather than raw clock speed. Two things stop this being five stars. The first is that nothing comes in the box, so on top of the chip you are buying a cooler as well, and this part wants a decent one. The second is the platform around it. My board needed a BIOS update before it would post, which meant borrowing an older CPU from a mate for an afternoon. Neither is really the processor's fault, but a first time builder should know what they are walking into. Eight weeks in and neither has bothered me since.
