Wide labels land dead centre, first time

Six inches wide is the whole point for us: our shipping labels are 6 x 4 and the desktop machines before could only just manage them, with the edges always a little ragged. This prints them dead centre at 203dpi and the barcodes read from whatever angle the scanner is pointed. Out of the box, took a roll, calibrated itself and printed, all inside ten minutes, which after the last one we bought was a relief!

Arrived on a Tuesday, on the bench by lunchtime, printing our first batch of shipping labels that same afternoon. The ribbon load is genuinely obvious: two spindles, one diagram inside the lid, done. Our labels come from three different suppliers and it has taken all of them so far, though I am told the fussiness shows up later on. Speed is such that the packer waits about as long as it takes to reach for the parcel!

Three stars, and I want to be fair about why. As a printer it is excellent. Fast, solid, prints a clean barcode all day long and has never jammed on us once. The problem is everything sitting around it. The software provided for designing labels is dated and awkward, and getting our order system to talk to it meant paying somebody who knows ZPL to write the templates. That was not in the budget and nobody mentioned it when we ordered. The other thing is ribbon. At 203dpi across a 6-inch web you go through it faster than the calculator on the website suggests, and we now buy ribbons by the case. Knowing all that, it is a fine machine. Going in blind, as we did, it is an expensive education.

We label frozen goods and the old printer used to jam whenever the labels came in from the cold. This one has a proper media path and takes them straight out of the fridge without complaint. Calibration after a roll change is a button press and about four labels of waste, which over a week adds up, but it is hardly a scandal. Print is dark and even right out to the edges.

On a busy bench for over a year now, and it has printed something like a quarter of a million labels. Not a number I can prove, but the counter is somewhere near it. The printhead was changed at roughly the year mark, which we were told to expect at that volume. Everything else has been paper and ribbon and nothing more. Four stars only because a printhead is not a cheap thing to buy
