Sheer size makes fitting and cleaning a chore

The cooling has been flawless throughout, so this is a review about the practicalities rather than the performance. A 420 radiator is enormous and heavy. Mine needed the front drive cage removed, it obstructs the top two motherboard headers once fitted, and cleaning the dust off means taking the front panel and the filter off rather than a quick vacuum, a job I have done four times in two years. Worth knowing before you commit, because none of it is on the box!

I have settled into a slightly awkward opinion about this cooler. It is unquestionably the best cooling I have had. A 420 radiator gives the fans so little to do that the machine is quieter under load than my last build was at idle, and after four months the temperatures never move much regardless of what I throw at it. But I keep doing the sums. What I paid would have bought a very good 360 and a graphics card upgrade, and the difference between the two coolers in real use is a handful of degrees and a bit of noise. It is the right product, bought slightly beyond the point of sense!

Fit and finish are exactly what you expect from this brand. Everything is machined properly, the fittings turn smoothly, and there is not a single LED anywhere, which was a large part of why I bought it. The mounting hardware is the best I have used, a screw down bracket that holds the block square while you tighten it rather than a spring that fights you. Cooling is excellent, obviously, with that much radiator! Nine days in and I have not found a thing to criticise.

With the 420 in the front of a very large case, it does exactly what a radiator that size should. The surface area is the whole argument. A 9950X under a sustained all core load sits in the seventies with the three fans turning at a speed I have to put my ear near the mesh to hear. On a 360 in the same machine the fans were audible from the sofa. If you want a silent workstation rather than a low number on a benchmark, this is how you get there. What keeps it off five stars is what you pay and what you have to own to use it. Very few cases take a 420 at all, the ones that do are big and expensive, and the cooler itself costs more than plenty of complete systems. Brilliant, but only if the rest of your build is already at that level. A fortnight in, I have no regrets about the outlay.

Here is the honest assessment for anyone weighing this against a normal cooler. The cooling is not four times better than a good 360, because physics does not work like that. What you actually buy is headroom, and headroom turns into silence. With this much radiator the fans sit at the bottom of their range almost permanently, so a machine that used to make a noise during a long export now makes none. My CPU under sustained load runs about six degrees cooler than it did, which is nice but not the point. What is worth criticising is fit. It needs a case built for it, a front mount rather than a roof mount in most chassis, and the tubes are stiff enough that routing them into the block took real effort. Once in, it is faultless, but the installation was the hardest of any cooler I have fitted. Coming up on six months and it has been worth the afternoon it cost me.
