Run up the stairwell and along the landing to an access point above the airing cupboard, fixed in with proper cable clips rather than the stapler sort. It has been utterly boring for nine months, which is exactly what you want from a cable. The length is honest, too. I measured it against a tape before pulling it through and it came out a shade over the 30 on the label, which is the right way round for a cable to be wrong. The moulded boots are chunky, so allow for that if you are threading it through a tight hole.

Lifted the floorboards in the study and ran this from the hall socket to the desk in one go, which is exactly the job a 30 metre length is for. Being hauled along a joist with a bit of string tied to the plug did not mark it at all, and the moulded boot meant the clip never caught on the way through. It is a fat cable though, so plan the hole you drill: the 16mm one I had already made was never going to take it and I ended up going up a size. Eight months of a solid gigabit link since, no negotiation drops and nothing to re-terminate. For roughly the price of one made-up patch lead you get a proper long run, which is the whole argument for buying it like this!

Ran it from the hall router along the skirting to the kitchen where the television and the console live, held down with proper cable clips every half metre. Being round rather than flat it tucks into the corner of the skirting nicely, and once painted trunking went over the visible stretch you would not know it was there. Nine months on, every clip is still holding. One small thing: the black is very black, and along a white skirting the two metres before the trunking starts is more obvious than I would like. Order it in white if your skirting is white!

Used it to get a wired link out to a garden office, clipped along the top of a fence and in through a vent, and 30 metres was just enough with a little slack at either end. What I would say to anyone doing the same is that this is an indoor cable. The jacket is thick and it has coped with five months of British weather so far, but it is not UV rated and I fully expect to be doing the job again in a couple of years once the top run has gone chalky. If the run is exposed, spend more and buy the proper external stuff. Inside a conduit it would be perfect.

One star is entirely about the connector. The cable itself seems fine, the link came up at full speed, and the jacket is thick and well made. But the clip on one end broke off the second time it went into a port, and it did not so much snap as crumble, which tells you what the plastic is like. On a 30 metre run behind furniture that clip is the only thing stopping the whole lot sliding out when somebody shifts the sideboard, and it now sits in the switch by friction alone with a repair collar taped over it. Not what I expected from a cable of this size.

Ran this from the router in the hall up through the airing cupboard and into the loft to feed an access point, and there was enough left over to coil neatly in the eaves rather than pulling it taut across a joist. It is a stiff cable and that is the main thing to know. Round, thick jacket, and it holds the shape it was coiled in for a good while. Round the two tight corners on the way up I had to fix it properly with clips rather than trusting it to sit, because left alone it wanted to spring back out. Let it warm up in the room for an hour before you start and it behaves far better. The connectors are the good sort, moulded boots that shield the clip, and neither end has snagged on a joist yet. Six months up there now and not a single dropped link. Four stars only because of the stiffness.

Wanted the desk in the far corner of the room off wireless without lifting a floor, so this went round three walls behind the skirting and under a doorway with a threshold strip over it. Thirty metres sounds like a lot until you go round a room the long way. I used about 24 of it and would not have wanted the 20 metre one. Thick, well made, and eight months on the boots have still not caught on anything when I have pulled a bit of slack through.
