First impressions are that the cooler is far larger than the chip needs, and that is entirely to the good. Everything I play at 1440p runs at well over 100fps with settings maxed, and while doing that the core sits at 60C with the fans at roughly 950rpm. With the case shut I genuinely cannot tell whether a game is running from the noise alone. The fans stop completely at the desktop. 16GB was the reason I chose this over the 12GB cards a tier down, and it has already justified itself in the two titles I play most. Twelve days in and nothing has given me pause. Very pleased so far.

At 925mV it holds stock clocks and pulls about 45W less, which takes the core down to 59C and the fans below 1000rpm. The cooler is clearly overspecified for the chip, which is the best kind of problem. The only irritation is having to install a heavy control suite if you want the lighting to do anything other than cycle.

Started very well and has aged badly, which is why this is three stars rather than five. The card performs exactly as it should at 1440p and 4K with upscaling, and the cooler held the core at 62C for the first stretch of its life. Since then one fan has developed a click at low speeds and about a third of the lighting on the shroud no longer comes on at all. Neither fault stops it working and I am still using it daily. But at this price I expected the thing to be as good in year two as it was in week one, and it plainly is not.

Performance is everything the reviews promised and the cooler is quiet, so all my complaint is about one noise. There is a clear electrical buzz whenever frame rates run high, worst in menus and loading screens where nothing is capped. It is audible from about two metres with the side panel on. A global 141fps cap makes it much better and does not remove it. Three stars because on a card costing this much I should not be building my settings around a noise. Everything else about it is five star.

Long term this has been a good card with one worrying trend. When it was new the gap between core and hotspot was about ten degrees. It is now closer to twenty two, with the core at 64C and the hotspot touching 86C under the same workload in the same case. Nothing has changed except time and dust, and a thorough clean made no difference at all, so I assume the paste has dried. It still performs, it still holds its clocks, and 16GB means it is not short of memory for 1440p. Four stars, but I will be repasting it before next summer and I did not expect that.
