Sound is not in question. What is in question is the BT multipoint, which drops the laptop 4 or 5 times a day and then needs the case opening and closing to sort itself out. On a set costing this much, with an app this thorough, that is a strange thing to still be wrong.

Long-term verdict from someone who wears these five days a week on a bus. The sound has not changed and the fit has not loosened, which is more than can be said for the two pairs that came before. What has gone is battery. A year in, a full charge gives about 5 hours rather than the 8 it managed when new, which is exactly the arithmetic everyone does before buying wireless and everyone ignores. Still excellent. Just not immortal.

Wearing these over a beard and under a motorcycle helmet was never going to work, so they live in a jacket pocket for the train instead. In that role they are close to perfect. Cancelling on a Northern service at rush hour is not the equal of a big over-ear pair, but the passive seal does most of the work and the rest is handled well enough that a podcast is audible at a low volume. Five months in the silicone tips have gone slightly tacky, which is normal, and 3 spare pairs came in the box!

Bought for a daily commute into Leeds and they have done every single day of it, something like 300 journeys. Eight months in the case hinge is still tight and the buds have not started dropping out of the charging contacts, which is where cheaper pairs go wrong!

Three stars is about the touch controls, which register a tap when I push the bud back into my ear and then skip the track I was enjoying. The app lets you turn them down, not off. Everything else about these is genuinely lovely, which makes the annoyance sharper.

These were bought as a fiftieth present and have since become the thing that goes everywhere, which was not the plan. The plan was for them to live on the desk. What makes them travel is the case, which charges wirelessly on the same pad as the phone and holds enough for a long weekend away without a cable. Small enough for a coat pocket, heavy enough that it does not feel disposable. 18 months in the sound is unchanged and the tips are on their third set, which is a consumable and no complaint. The right bud takes slightly longer to connect than the left, a second or so, and has done since new. The one thing worth saying to anyone hesitating: the fit is small. Big ear canals may find these disappear too far in.

True wireless that does not sound like true wireless is the entire pitch, and on LDAC from an Android phone these get closer than anything else I have had in my ears. A dynamic driver, an armature and a planar in each bud, and none of them announce themselves. The app is unusually good. Ten band equaliser, presets that are actually different from one another, and a setting for how much the touch controls respond, which stopped me pausing music every time I adjusted my hat. Battery is around 7 hours a bud with ANC on, and the case gives three more charges. That covers a working week of walks without the case going near a plug!
