Ordered for a home office after years of buying cartridges in twos, and the difference on day one is the sound of it. This one hums where the old one ground. Text comes out crisp on the cheapest copier paper in the cupboard, which was the real test. Setup on the Mac needed no downloading at all, the printer simply appeared in the list once it was on the network, and the phone was easier still. The only thing worth warning about is that first fill, which wants a level surface and no interruptions.

Replaced a laser that was costing more in toner than the thing was worth. The tank system is the whole point and it delivers: two of us work from home, we print maybe forty pages a week between us, and the black is still somewhere near three quarters after all that. A3 duplex is the other reason it was chosen over the cheaper models. It flips heavy paper without complaint, though it slows right down to do it, and a long double-sided job is something you start and then walk away from. What stops it being five stars is the scanner. The flatbed is fine for documents, but it struggles with anything glossy and photographs come back with a slight haze that no amount of fiddling with the settings shifts. The feeder is strictly single sided too, so scanning both sides of a stack means turning the whole pile over halfway through.

Five stars because the printing is faultless, but somebody should say out loud how big the thing is. It is an A3 machine and it is built like one, so measure the shelf before it arrives rather than after. The lid needs clearance above it to open fully as well, which caught me out under a wall cupboard. Once it is standing somewhere sensible there is nothing to fault. First page from cold is quick and the text is sharp enough for anything legal.

Set it up on a Saturday morning. Filling the tanks from the bottles took ten minutes and there is no way to make a mess of it, the necks only fit one colour each. Wifi was the slow part: it could not see the 5GHz band at all, and I ended up joining it to the 2.4 network from the front panel, which took three goes before the password stuck. Since then it has printed its way through a couple of hundred pages of coursework without a murmur.
