Bought to keep a small letting agency ticking over and it does the lot: tenancy packs printed double sided, identity documents scanned to email, the odd colour floor plan. It sits on top of a filing cabinet and nobody in our office has had to think about it since. The feeder takes a stack of twenty and does not chew them, which is more than the last one managed!

The running cost is exactly as advertised and that is the whole reason to own one. We print heavily in some weeks and not at all in others, and a year and a half in the black bottle has been topped up twice and the colours once between them. Where it disappoints is paper handling. The single cassette holds a modest stack and it will not take anything much heavier than thin card without complaining, so headed paper and labels have to go in one sheet at a time from the rear. It also picks the last few sheets of a low tray unevenly, which shows up as a skewed page every so often. None of that stops it being the right machine, but you notice.

Chosen over a laser after working out what the toner was actually costing us, and the decision has aged well. Double sided is the default here now, because it costs nothing to leave it switched on, and the paper bill has halved. The scanner earns its place as much as the printer does. Receipts go to a folder on the NAS at the press of one button, and the text recognition is good enough that searching a supplier's name genuinely finds the invoice. Warm-up is the thing you notice coming from a laser: there is not one. Press print, the page appears, none of the thirty seconds of whirring first.

Getting it onto the wifi took three attempts, which is the only reason this is not five stars. The panel found the network, announced that it had joined, then dropped off twice before it settled, and I rebooted the router in the end just to be sure of it. Everything since has been easy. Text is properly black rather than the grey an inkjet sometimes gives you, duplex flips without hesitating, and printing from an iPad needed nothing installed at all. It is quiet enough to sit in the same room as a call.

We came from a laser and there are two things to get used to. The first is that the page arrives immediately, which after years of waiting for a fuser to wake up feels almost wrong. The second is that dense black on cheap paper can look very slightly bruised where the ink soaks in, and on a big block of solid colour you can see it if you go looking. For letters, invoices and the children's homework none of that matters a jot. Scanning is quick, the feeder handles a stack, and the whole machine cost less to fill than a set of toners did.
