Used for: 1–3 months
Big, tough and it does not look ridiculous
Used for: More than a year
Back padding stops it digging in
Heavy before you put anything in it
A year of carrying a heavy machine across town and my shoulders have not complained once, which was not true of the cheap bag before it. The bag itself is not light though, so an empty one already feels like something.
Used for: More than a year
Protection you can trust with an expensive machine
Overkill unless you really are carrying 17 inches
Bought when I upgraded to a 17 inch laptop and discovered that nothing I owned would take it. As a piece of protection it is excellent. The laptop compartment is rigid at the sides and heavily padded at the bottom, the whole thing survived a fall off a luggage rack on a train, and after a year and a half of commuting the machine inside has not a scratch. Water resistance is real too, it has been out in a downpour and the inside stayed dry. What costs it a star is that it is enormous. On a train it is awkward between seats, in a busy office it does not slide under a desk, and with a 14 inch laptop in it you would look faintly ridiculous. Buy it for a big machine, not as a general bag.

Pocket layout is thought through
Everything has a home in this one. Laptop in the padded back section, charger in its own sleeve, a fleece lined pocket at the top for glasses and a phone, and two side pockets that actually hold a bottle without it falling out!
Used for: 6–12 months
Sits flat against your back when loaded
The logo is a bit shouty
Loaded up it stays put instead of swinging about, which matters on a bike. Could do without the branding on the front
Used for: More than a year
Protection is genuinely good
Straps have started to fray and the back panel gets hot
Mixed feelings now that it has had some proper use. The protection has never been in question, the laptop travels safely and the base has taken knocks that would have gone straight through a cheaper bag. The wear is where I am less happy. The webbing on the left strap has frayed at the adjuster and one of the side pocket seams has started to open. And in summer the back panel traps heat badly, there is padding but no channel for air, so a walk from the station arrives with a wet shirt.

Water ran straight off it
Caught in proper rain on the way home and the laptop came out dry
Used for: 3–6 months
Swallows a 17 inch machine and its brick
The one bag I have found that takes a 17 inch laptop and the charger without a fight. Straps are wide enough to make it bearable!
Used for: More than a year
Zips and stitching are still perfect
Bought for a gaming machine that weighs more than most people would carry, and the bag has not flinched. Two years of it now and the zips still run smoothly, which is where every rucksack I have owned before gave up first. The stitching at the strap joins is doubled over and shows no sign of pulling, and the base fabric has kept its shape even loaded with a laptop, a charger and a pair of headphones. It is not subtle looking and the red lining is very gaming, but the build quality is exactly what you are paying for!
Used for: 6–12 months
Takes a 17 inch and a mouse and a hoodie
Not something you would take to a meeting
Brilliant for a LAN night, less so for anywhere with a dress code
Used for: 1–3 months
Padding at the base is proper, not token
Empty it still takes up a lot of room
Carrying a 17 inch machine to and from an office twice a week, and the thing I care about is the base. Set the bag down hard and there is a good inch of foam between the laptop and the pavement, which the last one did not have. The compartment is a genuine 17 inch fit rather than an optimistic one, and there is a separate slot for the charger so the brick is not resting on the screen. Only complaint is bulk, it does not fold away into anything.
