Dense black, sharp small text and real speed
Three stars for a printer that prints beautifully and is a pain to live with in every other respect. The output is exactly what you would want of a mono laser at this level: dense black, sharp small text, flat pages, and it gets through a long document faster than anybody needs it to. The trouble starts with the driver. The universal one that installs automatically does not expose the second tray or the duplex defaults, so half the office was printing single sided onto headed paper until somebody worked out why. On the Mac it is worse: the generic driver prints, but the finishing options are simply absent, and the full package takes some finding. It also runs hot enough that the little room it lives in has warmed up noticeably.

From asleep to printing in a few seconds
Bought for a room where the four of us share one printer and it has not held anybody up once. Duplex is quick, the tray holds a full ream, and it goes from asleep to printing in a few seconds flat!
Used for: Less than a month
Fast, and the pages come out flat enough to bind straight away
Loud for the first few seconds of every job
Replaced a small office laser that had been struggling with the volume, and the difference in the first fortnight has been obvious. Long documents come out at a pace nobody stands and waits for, and the paper comes out flat rather than curled, which matters when it goes straight into a binder. Setup was as simple as these things get: plugged into the network, found by every machine in the office, and the duplex default set once from the panel so that everybody gets double sided whether they think about it or not. Two smaller things. The toner cartridge is alarming to look at but the yield is genuinely high, so the cost per page works out below the machine it replaced. And it is loud for the first few seconds of a job, then settles into a hum you stop hearing.

It only prints, there is no scanner on it
