Our accounts room went from two desktop machines to this one Toshiba, and the first surprise was how little floor it actually uses. The tray still opens with the shelf above it in place. It has printed the guts of two audit seasons now. A 140-page bundle comes off in about seven minutes, collated and stapled, which used to be a job somebody stood over with a stapler. Colour is consistent enough that our client packs no longer look like they were made on three different machines. The claimed yields are optimistic, as they always are, but not wildly: the black did roughly 80 per cent of what the box promised before the light came on. The one thing to budget for is the drum. Nobody mentions it when you are being sold the machine, and when the message came up eighteen months in it made a proper dent in the quarter. Worth knowing rather than a reason to look elsewhere.

The scanner is what earns it in our office: a 40-page contract goes through the feeder in one pass, both sides, and lands in the shared folder before I am back at my desk. Print quality on the colour side is honest rather than glossy, which suits invoices. It has sat in the corner by the kettle since spring and is quiet enough that nobody has complained

Three stars is where it sits after a fortnight, and most of that is the setup rather than the machine. Getting the e-Studio onto our office network took the best part of an afternoon and two calls to the chap who wires our building, and the address it gave itself changed overnight until we pinned it down. What lands in the tray is genuinely good, colour and all, but nobody warned us that the first page after a quiet spell takes an age to appear.
