Two stars' worth of grumbling and three stars' worth of phone, so here we are. The titanium frame has worn well and the screen is still flawless, but the battery has fallen off a cliff since the update in the spring and now needs a plug by mid-afternoon on the days I am out and about. The other thing nobody warns you about is the weight. In a shirt pocket it pulls the fabric down all day, and after a year I still notice it when I put an older phone in my hand.

Bought for my daughter starting sixth form, on the reasoning that a phone she keeps for years works out cheaper than two she does not. She has dropped it twice on paving, both times without a case on because of course, and there is not a mark on the frame. What sold me was the update promise more than any of the camera talk. Whatever handset she has when she leaves for university will still be getting security patches, which is not something I could say about the cheap Android she had before. Her verdict, for what it is worth, is that the photos in a dark cinema queue come out and her friends' do not. Mine is that she has stopped asking to borrow a charger at teatime!

Titanium was the right call over the black, it does not show every mark and the frame feels warmer to hold than the steel one it replaced. The action button gets used for the torch more than anything clever, which is exactly what I wanted from it, though I turned off the double-press first!

Upgraded from an 11 that had done its time and the jump in the camera is the part I keep noticing. Pictures in a dim pub come out looking like the room did rather than an orange smear, and the zoom is usable enough that I have stopped moving my feet. What I would say to anyone with smaller hands: go and hold one first. Mine is at the limit of what I can reach across, and the fingerprint reader everyone asks about simply is not there, so it is your face or a passcode. Still, no regrets. It has been the most solid phone I have owned.

Hard to be enthusiastic about a phone at this price that still cannot get me to bedtime. On a normal working Tuesday, mail and messages and maybe forty minutes of maps, it is knocking on the twenty per cent warning by seven in the evening, and that is with the screen dimmed and half the notifications turned off. It charges quickly enough on the right plug, which is the saving grace, but you are then tethered to a socket at the point in the day you least want to be. Everything else is as good as everyone says. The screen outdoors is genuinely readable, the camera in a dark restaurant does not fall apart the way my old one did, and it has never once got warm in my hand. I just expected a phone this size to carry a battery to match, and eight months in that has not changed.
