Written for the person I was before I ordered, who spent a month reading about hinges. The hinge is fine. Mine has been opened and shut more times than I care to think about and it is as firm as the day it arrived, with no gap, no grit and no wobble. The crease is there if you look for it at an angle and invisible when you are actually using the thing. What has surprised me is what it did to how I work. Long documents get read on the train instead of piling up. A spreadsheet is legible. Mail gets answered properly rather than with three words and an apology. What it has not solved is battery on a heavy day. Navigation and a video call in the same afternoon and it will want a plug before the evening, and I would rather it did not.

Given to my mother when her old handset finally gave up, on the grounds that the big screen would suit her eyes, and it has been a bigger success than I expected. She reads on it, she video calls on it, and she has worked out the split screen without any help from me. The one thing to know is the weight. She keeps it in a bag rather than a pocket, and the charging is slower than she is used to, so it goes on overnight.

Only had it a fortnight, so treat this as first impressions rather than a verdict. The screen is the reason you buy one and it does not disappoint: a full page of a book at a size my eyes are happy with, and two apps side by side that actually behave. The things I would flag for anyone hovering. It is heavy in a shirt pocket and you will notice by the end of an evening. The outer glass is slippery enough that it slid off the arm of a chair on the first day. And half the apps I use still open in a phone-shaped box in the middle of the screen with black either side, which for a device costing this much feels like it should have been sorted by now.

Bought as an upgrade from the Fold6 and the differences that matter are not the ones on the box. The outer screen is wider so typing on it is no longer a chore, the hinge closes flat with no gap for dust, and the whole thing has lost enough weight to sit in a shirt pocket without pulling it out of shape. Battery is where the half-terabyte version and the bigger one behave the same, and it is fine rather than remarkable: a full working day with maps and music, home with a fifth left. Seven months in and my only real complaint is that the case I want does not exist!

Genuinely torn about this one. As an object it is the most impressive thing I have owned and the screen is worth every bit of the fuss, but a phone has to work as a phone first. Signal has been the problem. In the office, where the handset it replaced sat happily on three bars, this drops to one and calls break up. Out in town it is fine. I have swapped the SIM back and forth to be sure it is not the network, and it is not. Everything else is exactly as advertised, which is what makes it so annoying. If the reception sorts itself out with a software update I will be delighted to say so.
