Registered memory only, my desktop kit was useless

This board is the reason our render box has not been opened in a very long time. Seven full length slots means three GPUs, a 10G card we did not end up needing and a capture card all coexist without a single lane compromise, which is the whole reason to buy a W790 board instead of a desktop platform. Eight DIMMs of registered memory gives us 512GB, and the machine has never once thrown an ECC correctable that turned into something worse. The management controller deserves a mention of its own. Remote console, remote power, sensor logs, all of it through a browser and none of it needing an agent on the machine. When something does need attention I can look at it from home rather than driving in. Coming up on two years in the rack and I have physically stood in front of it twice. Expensive, and worth every penny in a machine that earns its keep.

Utterly stable under loads that would fold a desktop board
You will pay for registered memory, and it adds up fast
Our finite element machine runs jobs that take days, and this is the first board we have had where nobody thinks about that. Eight sticks of RDIMM, all detected, ECC reporting into the management log, temperatures logged and graphed without any software on the host. Three years in and the correctable error count is still zero. The VRM sits around 55 under a sustained all core load with the standard heatsinks and a couple of chassis fans. Worth budgeting properly for the memory though. The DIMMs cost us more than the board and the processor put together.

Thunderbolt built in saved a slot for something else. All six fan headers sit along the top, which makes the bottom intake cable a very long run.

Firmware updates are a manual, unglamorous job and the notes are thin
Everything about the hardware has been right, so this is a review about living with a workstation board rather than a complaint about the board itself. Updating firmware here is nothing like a consumer board. There is no one click tool, the release notes say almost nothing beyond a version number, and you do it through the management interface with the machine down. I have done four updates in the two years it has been in service, and each one ate an evening with a set of notes open beside me. One of them changed the default fan behaviour and I did not find out until the room got loud. None of that is a fault exactly. It is a professional board and it expects a professional to be looking after it. But if you are coming from a ROG or an AORUS expecting a friendly update button, adjust your expectations before you buy.

Eight channel memory and remote management as standard
The QVL is short and it means it
Specified this for a simulation workstation with a W-3465X and it does exactly what the datasheet says, with one caveat about memory. Eight channels of registered DDR5 is transformative for the work we do, and the board trained a full 256GB set without complaint once we used a kit from the support list. An earlier attempt with a kit that was not on it would post, then fail memory test partway through, which cost most of a day to pin down. Take the QVL literally on this one. Everything else is a pleasure. The onboard management lets me power cycle the machine from another room, both 10G ports work without drivers, and the VRM heatsinks stay cool enough to touch under a full load.

It is an EEB board, so half the full towers on sale will not take it
Measure your case twice. Mine needed a new chassis because EEB is wider than E-ATX and the standoffs simply were not there. The board itself has been faultless with a W-3455.
