Consolidation ratio we could only dream of before
Consolidated three racks into one and the virtualisation density is exactly as advertised
Used for: Less than a month
One socket replaced four of our older nodes
Racked it as a container host and the density is absurd. One socket now does what four older nodes did, and the power bill reflects that rather nicely. 192 cores in a single box still makes me laugh.
Used for: 1–3 months
Core density nothing else touches
192 cores. Everything else now looks quaint
Used for: 6–12 months
Per core licensing and rack airflow both bite hard at 192 cores
Running these in production, the honest picture is more complicated than the core count suggests. The silicon is remarkable, no argument. Where we have come unstuck is everything around it. Getting 192 cores properly fed needs all twelve memory channels populated and NUMA aware scheduling, and a lot of our older workloads simply do not scale that wide. Two of our licence agreements are priced per core, which turned a hardware saving into a software bill nobody costed for. Cooling is the other one. In a standard rack this part wants far more airflow than the previous generation, and we had to change the whole aisle arrangement before it would run at its rated clocks under sustained load. Excellent hardware after eight months of it, but go in with your eyes open.
Used for: 1–3 months
Only worth it if the rest of the platform can keep up
Superb for our workload, though it needs the whole platform around it to be right or you waste most of the cores.
Used for: 1–3 months
Check your chassis really takes SP5 before you order
The performance per watt is the headline for us, not the raw speed. We are doing considerably more work in the same power envelope than the Xeon nodes it replaced. Do check your chassis supports SP5 properly before ordering.
Used for: More than a year
Batch window went from overnight to two hours
Populate all twelve channels or you waste it
Thirteen months in service and it has not dropped a single job. Twelve memory channels feeding 192 cores is a genuinely different class of machine, and our batch window has shrunk from overnight to about two hours.
