Used for: 3–6 months
Bought mainly because I already run one of their NAS boxes and wanted the same interface for the network. It was the right call: same login, same look, and the two show up in one place. Faster than the old router into the bargain
Used for: Less than a month
The interface feels like a proper computer
Only three LAN ports on the back
Set up like a NAS, which if you have owned one is high praise indeed
Used for: 6–12 months
The faster wired port makes backups a non-event
The 2.5 gigabit port was the deciding factor because the NAS has one too, and having them talk at that speed over a single cable has made backups something I no longer schedule for the night. Eight months in, the router has been up continuously apart from updates I chose to install. It runs cool enough that I keep it on a shelf in a cupboard with the door shut and have never had a problem.
Used for: 1–3 months
The better filtering goes behind a subscription
Replaced the box the ISP left and the difference was less about speed than about control. I can see what every device is doing, throttle the one that is hogging the line, and hand the kids' tablets a bedtime without a fight. The only thing that annoys is that the better filtering goes behind a subscription once the trial runs out.
Used for: More than a year
Still getting proper software updates
Wireless range is merely adequate
Two years on it has never needed a reboot and the interface still gets updates. Wireless range is merely adequate, which is why it is four stars rather than five, but nothing else has put a foot wrong.
Used for: 1–3 months
The best router interface I have used
The interface is the reason to buy this. It is a proper desktop in a browser, with windows and a package centre, and everything a network needs is a click away rather than buried. VLANs for the smart plugs, a separate network for the kids, static leases in a list you can sort. I have set up a lot of routers and none of them made this much sense on the first evening!
Used for: 3–6 months
Parental scheduling that genuinely works
The good filtering wants a subscription once the trial ends
Quiet, cool, and the parental scheduling has stopped a lot of arguments in this house!
Used for: 6–12 months
The software is in a different league
Wireless falls away at the far end of a long house
We have a house that is long rather than tall, and one router at the front was never going to reach the kitchen at the back. This does, just about, and adding a second unit later as a mesh point is the plan rather than a panic. Ten months in, the software is still the best thing about it and the wireless is still the weakest. Range is fine, throughput close in is fine, but at the far end of the house it falls away faster than the Netgear it replaced did. Where it wins is everything else: the traffic monitor is genuinely readable, the VPN server took five minutes, and the update process tells you exactly what changed rather than saying improvements and bug fixes.
