The scanning itself is fine. Everything around it is why this is three stars. Drivers first. It ships with a capture application, a TWAIN driver, a network utility and a separate updater, and on a fresh Windows machine three of those four wanted a restart. The network utility then decided the scanner was on a different subnet from itself and would not be argued with until somebody set a static address. Second, the feeder. It is rated for a stack, and it will take a stack, but only if the stack is one weight of paper. Put a folded compliment slip in with A4 letters and it skews, and a skewed page in the middle of a batch means finding it afterwards. What it does well it does very well. But we bought it to take what the post brings, and the post does not bring clean office paper.

The rollers want a wipe long before the manual says

Does everything asked of it and I would buy it again, but two things are worth knowing before you order. The first is that the rollers want cleaning far sooner than the manual implies. Ours started skewing at about four thousand sheets and a wipe fixed it completely, so do not panic when it happens. The second is that there is no flatbed. Obvious from the listing, easy to forget when a client brings in a passport and there is nowhere to put it!

Sits on the end of a reception desk and swallows the day's post at the end of the afternoon. Straight to a folder on the server, named by date, nobody touches a PC. The reason it falls short is the ultrasonic sensor, which cannot tell a compliment slip stuck to a letter from a genuine double feed and stops for both. You learn to unstick things first.

The thing I keep noticing after nine months of an estate agency's tenancy files is how little it asks of anyone. No warm-up, no calibration ritual, no software that wants updating before it will open. Press the button on the front, the batch goes where the profile says, done. Staff who were frightened of the old machine use this one without being asked twice, which is worth more than a page rate. The only sound it makes is the paper.

Bought for a small architects' office to get away from the all-in-one that scanned at the speed of thought. This does a set of committee minutes in the time it takes to put the kettle on, and the U-turn path means it lives happily on a shelf where there is no room for paper to come out of the back. The TWAIN driver behaves in every application we have thrown at it, which was not true of the last one.

Came in to replace a desktop scanner that had been limping for years, and the difference is not the speed, it is that nobody has to stand over it. Load, press, walk away. A box of invoices that was a whole morning's job is now something you start and then get on with the actual work.
