A whole herbarium sheet fits on the glass

Scanning a lifetime of pressed botanical specimens for a university herbarium. The glass is big enough to take a whole mounted sheet without folding anything, and the resolution is enough to read the collector's pencil note in the corner.

Replaced an ageing flatbed that had gone yellow in the corners, and the difference on flat artwork is not subtle. Shadow detail in dark areas comes through where the old one just gave black, and the glass is genuinely edge to edge so a full sheet does not need shuffling. What nobody tells you is how much of the job is handling. Each sheet has to be laid down, the lid closed, the preview checked. A stack of originals is a morning's work whatever the scanner does, and the machine is only ever waiting for you. Built like a piece of kit, though. No creaks, no flex.

Watercolours up to the full size of the glass go on and come off looking like the painting rather than a photograph of the painting. That was the whole reason for the spend and it has been met. Colour is close enough out of the box that I only had to profile it once. It is a big lump. The lid alone needs both hands and the footprint swallowed a desk that used to hold a monitor as well. Warm-up before the first scan of the day takes a moment, then it is straight on to the next sheet.

The lamp has not shifted colour that I can measure in two years of gallery reproduction work. I run the calibration target through it every few months and the profile barely moves, which for anyone selling giclee prints is the entire point of buying a graphics scanner rather than a document one!

Film holders that actually resolve 35mm grain

The transparency lid is the reason this one and not a cheaper A4 machine. Four boxes of my father's 35mm negatives have gone through it in strips of six and the grain is there, properly resolved, without the mush a flatbed usually makes of film. Dust removal in the bundled software is slow but it works, and it has saved hours of spotting by hand!
