An engineering practice with plan chests full of large drawings. The flatbed takes the big sheets and the feeder takes everything else, and having both in one machine means nobody has to walk from one room to another. Drawings that were done in pencil on tracing paper come out legible with the contrast pushed a little, which I did not expect. Blueprints with a blue ground need a bit of coaxing but they get there.

Double-feeds anything thinner than copier paper

When it works it is superb, and for eight months it did. Then the feeder started double-feeding on anything thinner than ordinary copier paper, and the ultrasonic detector stops the batch rather than warning you afterwards, so a run of receipts is now a stop-start business. Cleaning the rollers helps for a day and then it is back.

The network side is the whole value and also the only complaint. Scan to email works, scan to a folder works, but the address book has to be typed in on the panel one entry at a time and there is no way to import a list from a spreadsheet.

A GP surgery bought this to clear the Lloyd George envelopes before going paperless, and it has done about two hundred thousand sheets since. That is a number I can stand behind because the counter is on the panel and I check it when the roller is due. The A3 flatbed matters more than you would think. Every records box has something folded, taped or glued to a card, and being able to lift the lid and scan it flat without hunting for another machine keeps the batch moving. The missing star is the software. Document Capture Pro is capable and unlovely, the profiles are fiddly to build, and once a profile is on the machine you cannot edit it from the panel. Get it right on the PC first and then leave it alone.
