Four months in on an allotment shed and it has already earned itself. The alert that arrives at three in the morning is a person, not a badger, because the zones ignore the ground and watch the door. Battery has never dropped below half thanks to the panel

This has watched a smallholding gate for two years and has been the single best purchase for the place. No mains, no broadband, nothing but a post and a bracket. The panel keeps the battery between eighty and full through the year and only in the darkest fortnight of December did it dip enough for me to think about it. Detection is good enough that I get an alert for a person or a vehicle and nothing for the sheep, which took an afternoon of drawing zones and adjusting sensitivity to achieve. Clips are on the card as well as in the app, so nothing depends on the signal being kind. The honest caveat is that everything is slower than a wired camera. Live view takes a moment to connect and moving the head about lags. For a gate in the middle of nowhere, none of that matters.

Does what it promises, so four stars rather than three, but there are two things worth knowing before you buy. The first is that everything runs through the sim, so a bad signal day means a slow app and a delayed clip. The second is the tilt range, which does not go as far down as I wanted for a camera mounted high on a barn, and I ended up packing the bracket out with a wedge to get the angle.

Bought for a static caravan that sits empty most of the year with no broadband anywhere near it, and it went up on the side in an afternoon with four screws and a sim. The pan and tilt from the phone is the part that makes it useful rather than just present. I can swing it round the plot and check the door, the gas locker and the neighbour's fence without anybody driving over. Signal at that spot is one bar, which slows the live view to a crawl, though recorded clips still arrive. The solar panel has kept it charged since the day it went up, and the app notification lands within a few seconds of movement.

Set it up on the kitchen table before it ever went outside, which I would recommend to anyone: get the sim working and the app paired somewhere warm rather than up a ladder in the rain. Once mounted it has been completely undemanding. Motion alerts come through with a still image attached, the siren can be triggered from the app if somebody is somewhere they should not be, and the whole thing runs off the sun. For a plot with no power at all it is the only sensible answer!
