Samsung NVMe SSD powered by newly designed in-house controller
Up to 7,450 / 6,900 MB/s sequential read/write speed
Power efficient SSD, reliable thermal control
Reach max performance of PCIe® 4.0. Experience longer-lasting, opponent-blasting speed. The in-house controller's smart heat control delivers supreme power efficiency while maintaining ferocious speed and performance, to always keep you at the top of your game.
PCIe 4.0’s best theoretical sequential read is 8,000 MB/s - 990 PRO reaches 7,450 MB/s as of Q3, 2022.
Huge speed boost. 40% and 55% faster random read/write speeds than 980 PRO - up to 1,400K/1,550K IOPS, while sequential read/write speeds up to 7,450/6,900 MB/s reach near max performance of PCIe® 4.0. Fly high in gaming, video and 3D editing, data analysis, and more.
Sequential and random write performance was measured with Intelligent Turbo Write technology being activated. Intelligent Turbo Write operates only within a specific data transfer size. Performance may vary depending on SSD’s firmware, system hardware & configuration and other factors. For detailed information, please contact your local service centre. Test system configuration: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor CPU@3.80GHz, DDR4 3600MHz 16GBx2 (PC4-25600 Overclock), OS - Windows 10 Pro 64bit, Chipset - ASRock-X570 Taichi To maximise the performance of the 990 PRO, please check whether your system supports PCIe 4.0 at the Intel or AMD website. 4TB to be released in 2023.
More power-efficient performance. Higher performance usually consumes more power. 990 PRO uses less power with up to 50% improved performance per Watt over 980 PRO. This low-power design makes max PCIe® 4.0 performance possible with optimal power efficiency.

Used for: Less than a month
Pros
Nine second boot from cold
Cons
Usable capacity is well short of the number on the box
Comment
Dropped it into the second M.2 slot as a games drive and the machine boots in about nine seconds now. Only grumble is that the 2TB shows as 1.81TB once Windows has had its say!

Pros
Clone went through first time
Comment
Windows moved across in one go and the whole machine feels like it did new

Cloned the old SATA drive over with the free Samsung tool and it was done inside forty minutes, no reinstall, no messing about with licence keys.
What surprised me was the heat. Everyone warns you about Gen4 drives cooking, but with the motherboard's own heatsink on top it sat at 48 degrees through a full Steam library transfer and never once dropped speed. Sustained write held around 1.4GB/s until the last few hundred gigabytes, which is where the cache gives up, and even then it was faster than the drive it replaced!

Used for: Less than a month
Pros
Genuinely quick once it is kept cool
Cons
Runs hot and ships without a heatsink of its own
Comment
Fast, no argument there, but this thing runs hot enough that I would think twice before putting one under a graphics card.
Mine is in the top slot with the board heatsink and idles in the low forties. Fine. The problem is the second slot, which sits directly under the GPU backplate, and a mate's identical drive in that position throttles during long copies. Mine has not thermal-limited yet but it has touched 71 degrees moving a big video project across.
Three stars because at this money I expect the drive to come with its own heatsink rather than relying on whatever the motherboard happens to provide.

Used for: 6–12 months
Pros
Drops straight into the PS5 bay
Cons
You are buying the heatsink separately
Comment
Sits in a PS5 with the cheap aluminium heatsink and the console has never once complained about it. Loading in the bigger open world games is a second or two quicker than the internal drive, which I did not expect. Eight months on there is no sign of slowing and the drive health readout still says 100 per cent. The fit in the console bay is snug but it does go in!

Used for: More than a year
Pros
No measurable degradation
Cons
Gets warm in a cramped case
Comment
Still going strong two years on, health readout has not budged a single per cent

Used for: Less than a month
Pros
Handles scratch disk duty without breaking sweat
Cons
No heatsink in the box
Comment
Second one of these I have bought, this time for the scratch disk on a video machine. Renders that used to hammer the old drive now finish while the kettle boils!
