Bought secondhand-grade kit new for a lab and it does exactly what a Catalyst does: boots slowly, takes a config, and then runs forever. The command line is the reason to have one, because everything you read about networking assumes this syntax. The fans, though, are from another era entirely.

Forty-eight PoE ports and a stack port, in a chassis built like a safe. We use it as the access layer in a building with a lot of phones and cameras and it has taken every one of them without a murmur. Two things worth knowing. The first is the noise, which is considerable and constant, so this belongs in a comms room and nowhere else. The second is that it wants a proper commissioning: there is no wizard, no app, and the useful configuration all happens at a prompt.

It went into a training rack where the whole point is that students see the same prompts they will meet at work, and for that it is ideal. Boot time is comical by modern standards, well over a minute before a single port comes up, and it draws power like a small heater. Five months in it has never dropped a link or needed attention, which is what you buy the badge for.
