The train test is the one that matters in this house. Kings Cross to Edinburgh, a film for the first half, work for the second, headphones in, and it landed with over half the battery showing. Held one-handed it is light enough that reading in bed does not become an arm exercise, which the bigger one never managed. Everything lives on it now, offline, so the patchy signal along the coast makes no difference at all!

Video editing on a tablet sounded like a compromise and it has not been one. Four camera angles of a wedding, cut on the sofa, exported while the kettle boiled, and the fan never came on because there is not one. Two terabytes is the reason it works: the footage stays on the device from card to export, with no shuffling onto a drive halfway through. The keyboard is essential for the timeline, though.

Bought for music, which is not what most of these reviews are about. Twenty tracks with plug-ins running and it has not stuttered once, and the two terabytes mean the sample libraries live on the device instead of on an external drive on a cable. The pencil gets used for automation curves, which sounds daft and works beautifully. The grumble is the same as everyone else's: the keyboard is an extra purchase, a serious one, and without it this is a machine you use on a table with a stand. First fortnight and no regrets otherwise!

Most of a year with this as the main machine at home, and the summary is that it does ninety percent of what a laptop does, beautifully, and fights you over the last ten. The screen is worth the money on its own. Films look like the cinema, drawing is instant, and outside in the garden it stays readable. With the keyboard attached it weighs about the same as the laptop it displaced, which rather undoes the argument, and the whole thing cost more than that laptop did. Battery is the surprise: eight or nine hours of ordinary use, a weekend away on a single charge if it is only reading. Four stars, and the star is missing because of the software rather than the hardware.
