The folio is not optional and not cheap

Carried this through eight months of travelling for work and the argument for it is that the bag now holds one device instead of three. It is the laptop at the hotel desk, the notepad in the meeting, and the film on the flight home. The screen is the best part. Bright enough to read a contract in a sunny window seat, and the shape means a full page fits without scrolling. Battery is honest rather than heroic. A day of meetings with the brightness sensible gets to about seven in the evening, and a weekend away without the charger is not on. The pen is the thing I would not give up. Signatures, mark-ups, sketching a layout on a napkin that is not a napkin. Five stars with one warning, which is that the folio is not optional and not cheap.

This was bought to replace two things, a laptop and an ageing iPad, and it has managed both, which I did not really expect. For work it is a proper Windows machine. Two documents side by side, the awkward accounts package, a Teams call on one half of the screen while I take notes on the other. For everything else it is a tablet. My daughter watches things on it in the back of the car, I read on it in bed, and a film on a train fills the screen properly at this size. Four stars rather than five for the accessories. The folio and the pen together add a serious sum to a machine that already costs plenty, and neither is optional in practice.

The kickstand is the bit I was most sceptical about and it has turned out to be the best thing on it. Any angle from upright to nearly flat for drawing, and it holds where you put it after eighteen months of daily adjusting. On the train, on the kitchen table, on a hotel bed, it just stands there and gets on with it!

Not a first-impressions review: this has been the only computer in my life for two years. What has held up: the screen, which still looks new; the hinge, which is as stiff as it was; the speed, which for documents, mail and a hundred browser tabs has never once been the problem. What has not: battery, down by an hour or so from new, and the folio, which has gone shiny at the wrist rests and a bit loose at the magnets. What I would tell a buyer is that the tablet is only half the purchase. The pen and the folio are the other half, and the machine is a nice screen and not much else without them.
