My father is eighty-one and has spent a decade saying computers are too complicated, by which he mostly meant the four cables and the box that sat where his knees wanted to go. This has one lead. That one fact has done more for his confidence than any amount of explaining from me. It comes with no operating system, which is worth saying loudly, because he would never have got past that on his own. I put Windows on it at my house before it went to his, which took an evening and a memory stick. Since then, nothing. It has lived on the same end of the dining table for two years, it wakes when he presses a key, the screen is bright enough that he has stopped squinting, and the speakers are loud enough for the radio. The eight gigabytes will be what finishes it eventually, though at the rate he uses it that may be a while yet.

It went on the front desk of a small garage, where it takes bookings and prints invoices and gets touched by hands that have been under a car all morning. Wipe-clean, and no tower on the floor to fill up with oil and grit. Only thing worth saying is that everything lives inside the screen, so the day it does go wrong it is the whole unit that goes off for repair rather than a part of it. At this price I can live with that!
