Ten months on a phone that gets dropped on a regular basis and the case has done its half of the job: back glass perfect, camera unmarked, corners intact. The print has not scratched off despite living next to keys. The edges are low, so a screen protector is doing the other half.

Five stars, with a list of small irritations that are worth knowing before you order. The magnet ring will pick up a fridge magnet, a paperclip and, on one memorable occasion, a drawing pin, none of which does the back any favours. The button covers are firm for the first fortnight and then settle down, so do not judge them on day one. The camera ring is tall, which is good for the lenses and bad for the phone spinning when you tap the screen on a desk. None of that changes what it is. It is the thinnest case I have used that still holds a wallet, and the artwork has not scuffed at all in four months of ordinary handling.

Turned up and the first surprise was the weight, or the lack of it. On the phone it adds so little that the case feels like a coat of paint. The pattern is properly done and catches the light at an angle. My reservation is the finish on the flat sections, which is smooth rather than woven and does not grip a shirt pocket, so the phone has slid out twice on a sofa. The woven parts are fine.

Beautiful object, middling case, and three stars is where those two average out. The fit is exact and the magnet is strong. But the sides are slippery where the pattern is printed rather than woven, and on a phone this size that is the difference between holding it and juggling it. I have caught it twice already. If the whole back were textured I would have no complaint at all.

Third Pitaka case in this house and the reason is always the same: they are the only ones thin enough that the phone still behaves like a phone. This one adds the artwork, which the plain ones do not, and it has survived a fortnight in a pocket with keys without a scratch across the print. The weave is textured enough to grip a hand and slick enough not to catch on a jeans pocket, which sounds like a contradiction until you handle one. MagSafe is the strongest I have used. The phone will hold on a vent mount over a cattle grid and a wallet stays put through a day of walking. Charging through it is no slower than off the case. The camera ring deserves a mention: it is tall enough that the phone sits flat and rocks less on a desk than it does bare.

Long-term note on this one, because the short reviews all talk about how it looks. The finish has held up better than any case I have owned. The woven sections show no wear at all and the printed panel has kept its colours, which I did not expect from something in and out of pockets all the time. No peeling at the edges of the print, no lifting, no fading in the sun on a car dashboard. The magnet is as strong as it was on the first day. It still holds a wallet, still snaps onto a charger in the dark, and has never once let the phone slide off a vent mount. It is four stars rather than five only because the protection is minimal by design and I have watched a friend crack a screen in an identical case. Buy it knowing that, and it is superb.
