Used for: 3–6 months
Full gigabit once it was seated properly
Sat at 100Mb until I reseated the router end
Middling stars because mine negotiated at 100 rather than gigabit for the first fortnight and I chased everything else in the house before I thought to reseat the plug at the router end. It has run at full speed since and I have not touched it, so possibly it was never fully home. Worth checking your link speed rather than assuming.
Used for: 3–6 months
Long enough to cross a hall in one run
No cable ties or clips in the bag
Bought for a village hall projector run. Plugged in and forgot about
Used for: 6–12 months
Thin enough to go under a stair carpet
Black only, no help if you want to colour-code
Runs under the stair carpet to the back bedroom and has never once played up
Used for: More than a year
Two winters outdoors and the link has never dropped
Nothing on the listing about UV or outdoor use
This has been up the outside wall of the house for two winters now, stapled under the render lip and into the garage, which is not what UTP is meant for and I knew that when I did it. The jacket has gone slightly chalky where the sun hits it but the link has never faltered, still a solid gigabit into the switch on the bench. Marking it down only because there is no gel or UV rating on the listing, so anyone doing what I did is guessing. Indoors it would be five stars without thinking.
Used for: 1–3 months
Holds its coil memory and needs an evening to relax
Five stars for the cable, but do not buy this expecting it to lie flat on day one. Mine came off the coil with a memory like a spring and needed an evening stretched out along the landing before it would sit in the trunking. Once it was in it has been faultless, and the jacket takes a cable tie without pinching.
Used for: Less than a month
Nothing to set up, it just worked
Only the one length in this listing
Straight up the stairwell, plugged in, gigabit. Done
Used for: 1–3 months
Vanishes behind a skirting board once clipped
Went in behind the skirting with the cable clipped every 300mm and you have to know it is there to see it. Fed a five-port switch in the loft office that runs a desktop, a printer and a little NAS. Everything sees the full 500 the line gives, and calls stopped breaking up the day the wifi came out of the chain.
Used for: 6–12 months
Cheap and it does not look like a bodge
No boot shroud, so mind the latch in a tight rack
Feeds the CCTV recorder in the garage. Cheap, black, invisible, does exactly that
Used for: Less than a month
Comes bagged tight and keeps the kinks for a while
Ordered 25 metres for a run that measured 18 on the tape, and I am glad I did, because going round the door frame and over the loft hatch ate the difference. The excess is coiled behind the desk in a figure of eight. Only gripe is how tightly it is bagged, it took a good while to stop kinking.
Used for: 3–6 months
Went in without a single hole in a rented flat
We rent, so nothing could be drilled and nothing could go through a wall. This went along the top of the skirting, under the door with one of those flat door bars, and round to the back bedroom on self-adhesive clips that come off cleanly. Four months in with the landlord none the wiser and the desk on a proper wired link.
Used for: 3–6 months
Bought it to get the boy's Xbox off the wifi because he blamed the connection for everything. Twenty-five metres reaches from the router in the front room, up the stairs and along to his desk. He has had to find a new excuse!
