The only pair that has not hurt over glasses
No folding at all, so the bag has to fit them flat
Wearing them over glasses is the test any over-ear pair fails for me. These do not: the cushion sits around the arm rather than pressing it into my temple!
Used for: 1–3 months
A month between charges is not an exaggeration
Battery is the headline and it is not marketing. I charged them the day they arrived and did not need to again until the middle of the following month, and that was with about 40 minutes on the walk in and out most days plus a few films. What costs it a star is the case, which is a soft pouch rather than a shell and does nothing for a pair that does not fold. Mine goes in the rucksack wrapped in a jumper, which is not what you expect at this price.
Used for: 3–6 months
Cushions and outer caps both unclip and swap
You feel 450g on your crown after two hours
Bought the silver ones because my partner said the copper looked like a plumbing fitting. They are heavy, 450g or thereabouts, and on a long flight that weight sits on the crown rather than the ears. The ANC is the best I have used on a bus. Four months in the cushions still look new, and they unclip if they ever do not.
Used for: 6–12 months
Better than the Sony pair on the next desk at office chatter
Bought as a treat after a promotion and used mainly in an open-plan office where the noise is people, not machines. The ANC handles the machines completely and people partially, which is what every pair does, though this one is better at it than the Sony pair on the next desk. Eight months in and the silver has picked up a few marks around the hinge where it goes in the bag. No creaks, no rattles, and the cushions are exactly as they were. The one thing I would change is the weight, and Dyson clearly will not.
Used for: 1–3 months
Everything that wears out can be replaced
Bass needs the app before it is listenable
My old ANC pair had gone crackly in one cup and I wanted something that would not be landfill inside a couple of years. These take apart: cushions off with a twist, caps off with a tug, and the battery is not glued to the frame. The cancelling on the Piccadilly line is close to silence, which I did not think was possible on a rubber-wheeled tube. Out of the box the bass is heavy-handed, but three minutes in the app with the EQ and it settles into something I would call neutral!
Used for: More than a year
These get shared. I wear them on the commute, my daughter wears them for revision, and neither of us has had to change the cushions yet. 18 months in, the only thing that has needed doing is a firmware update the app pushed on its own. Still charges to full in about three hours.
Used for: 1–3 months
Built like something you would still own in ten years
The aluminium arms feel like a tool rather than a gadget
