  • CBCharlie B.24 August 2026

    Used for: 1–3 months

    Pros

Every pair has its own grain in the wood

    Comment

Came in as a step up from a well-known planar that had gone slightly bright with age. These are warmer, heavier, and better built by a distance. The cups are real wood and each pair has its own grain, which is a small pleasure!

    Pros

Planar bass that no dynamic driver gets near

    Comment

An amp is not optional. The 50 ohm rating on the box is misleading; plugged into the headphone socket on a MacBook these sound thin and slightly apologetic, which had me worried for an evening. Through a modest desktop DAC and amp the whole thing opens out and the planar bass arrives, tight and low and completely unlike a dynamic driver. Anyone considering these should budget for the chain. The headphones are the cheap part of the decision, which is a strange thing to write about a pair costing this much!

    Pros

Wide stage for a headphone that is not fully open

    Cons

No use anywhere there are other people

    Comment

Semi-open is the compromise nobody warns you about. In a quiet room they are wonderful and the stage is much wider than any closed pair I have had. On a train the world comes straight in, and anyone within 2 metres gets a decent share of whatever is playing. Nine months in the pads have softened nicely.

    Cons

Stock cable has a mind of its own

    Comment

Wonderful, and the stock cable is stiff enough to be annoying

    Used for: 1–3 months

    Comment

The thing that keeps surprising is the decay. Notes stop dead when the recording says they should, and that turns out to matter more than any amount of extra detail. The practical side is less romantic. They need an amp, they weigh a lot, and the semi-open cups mean the room hears a fair bit. None of that is hidden in the specification, so it is hard to hold against them, but it does narrow who these are for. Six weeks in, no regrets at all.

  • GHGeorge H.30 June 2026

Used for: More than a year

    Comment

Bought these for the desk at home after a decade of using studio closed-backs and never quite enjoying music on them. The difference is not detail, it is weight of note: a bass guitar has body and stops when it should, rather than ringing on. The weight on the head is the price. They are 380g before the cable and after two hours there is a definite line where the headband sits. A pad swap to something thicker helped, and that took ten minutes with no tools. Two years in the mahogany has darkened slightly where hands touch it, which looks deliberate, and the cable connectors are still tight. Nothing has creaked, nothing has come loose, and the RP drivers sound exactly as they did. They do not travel. That is not a complaint, it is a description: this is a chair-and-amp headphone and it is very good at being one.

    Used for: 3–6 months

    Pros

Clamp settles down after a few weeks

    Cons

Nothing about them suits a commute

    Comment

Four months in and the only change is that they now go on without a conscious decision. The clamp eased off somewhere around week three and the pads have taken the shape of a head. Sound has not moved at all, which for a planar is the point.

    Used for: 3–6 months

    Cons

The last ten per cent of quality costs a lot here

    Comment

Three stars because the value case is hard to make. They are beautifully built and sound very good, and there are planars at 60% of the price that get most of the way there. What you are paying for is the wood, the finish and the fact that Fostex still make them properly. I am not certain I needed all three.

  • SPSophie P.16 June 2026

    Used for: 3–6 months

    Pros

Texture on strings that most headphones smooth over

    Comment

Ordered after hearing a pair at a hi-fi show and spending the following month failing to forget them. That is a bad way to buy anything and it worked out. What they do best is texture. A cello sounds like rosin on a string rather than a smooth tone, and a badly compressed pop record sounds exactly as flat as it is. Not a party trick, just honesty. Build is old-fashioned in the best sense: metal yoke, wooden cups, screws you can actually get at. This is a pair that will still be working in a decade!

  • SMSophie M.14 June 2026

    Used for: 1–3 months

    Pros

Wood cups that age rather than scuff

    Cons

Heavy, and you know it after an hour

    Comment

The mahogany cups look better in the room than in the photos
