Used for: More than a year
Nothing inside can be changed, so it ages all at once
It was fine when it arrived and it is still fine at exactly the things it was fine at then, but two years on everything else has quietly closed off. No memory slots, no drive bays, one usable port once the hub takes the other, and a display I cannot use as a second screen when I eventually replace the guts of it. The real sting is that the panel is still lovely and the computer behind it is the part that has aged. Perfectly good glass welded to a machine I have outgrown, with no way to separate the two. Next time I will take an ugly box with slots in it and keep the nice screen for a decade.
Used for: Less than a month
Set up in an afternoon, straight onto the shared drive and the office printer with no fuss at all. Whoever cleared the desktop of preinstalled rubbish before shipping deserves a drink, because there was none to remove, though the printer driver still took a hunt!
Used for: Less than a month
Completely silent in a room you sleep in
Two ports is two short
Bought for a home office that doubles as a bedroom, so the requirement was silence and it delivers. Wakes with a keypress, no fan, no whine, nothing!
Used for: 3–6 months
Everything on the desk worked without drivers
Wants a hub the moment you own anything older than it
Quietest thing on the desk by a distance, and the printer, the scanner and both screens all came up without me installing a single driver!
Used for: 6–12 months
Silent and quick for everyday office work
Sixteen gigs runs out and cannot be topped up
Perfectly decent office machine that I struggle to be enthusiastic about. It does the accounts, the email and a hundred browser tabs without complaint, and it does them silently, which is worth something in a small room. Sixteen gigabytes is where I keep bumping my head though. Two spreadsheets, a video call and a design app open together and the beachball turns up, and there is nothing at all I can do about that afterwards.
Used for: Less than a month
You genuinely cannot hear it, and it never makes you wait
The reason for buying was noise. The old machine sat under a desk in a room with a sofa in it and you could hear the fan from the sofa, which meant it got switched off, which meant nobody used it. This one I have had to physically check was on more than once. Boot is the other half of it. Left it asleep, come back the next morning, touch a key and the desktop is there before the screen has finished brightening. No login spinner, no ten minutes of updates installing themselves while you sit there. For a machine that mostly does email, banking and the odd bit of homework, that is the entire experience, and it gets it right.
Used for: 1–3 months
Quiet enough to forget it is on
Silent, instant, and the desk is finally clear!
Used for: Less than a month
Takes up less desk than the tray it replaced
the whole thing sits on the desk taking up less room than the old keyboard tray
Used for: 3–6 months
Four minutes of waiting every morning became twenty seconds
The stand only tilts, so mine is propped on a ream of paper
Came off a five-year-old tower that had started taking four minutes to reach a usable desktop, and four months on the difference is still the sort you notice every morning. Cold start to email open is under twenty seconds now, and it does it without a sound. The stand is the compromise. It tilts and that is all it does, so unless your desk happens to be the right height you are putting books under it or buying an arm. Mine sits on a ream of paper, which rather undercuts the design.
