The old workstation used to be a decision — start the render or go home — and this one has removed the decision. A job that used to take the whole night is done inside two hours and I have stopped planning my evenings around it. The only thing I would warn about is the depth. It needs about ten centimetres behind it for cables before the panel will even sit flush, and eight months in it still lives further out from the wall than I would like.

Specified around memory rather than the card, because our scenes are large rather than complicated, and that turned out to be the right call. Everything opens whole now, no proxies, no splitting a set across two files, no waiting for a cache. The other half of it is that it holds the same pace at hour seven as at hour one, which the machine it replaced never managed past about ninety minutes, though it is not a quiet machine while it does it!
