Runs the paperwork for a two-van business and it has been reliable in a way the last three printers were not. Invoices, job sheets, the odd colour photo of a finished job for the customer file. Ink cost has been the revelation. A year and a bit in, on maybe two hundred pages a month, and it is still on the original fill of everything except black. Scan to email saves a step several times a day. It is not the fastest machine on the shelf, but nothing about it has ever needed thinking about.

Replaced a cartridge Brother that had started refusing anything but its own ink, and the tank version is a different animal altogether. Filling it is genuinely mess-free, the bottles are keyed so you cannot put cyan in the magenta tank, and the first page came out about a minute after switching it on. Text is sharp, the feeder took a twelve-page contract at the first attempt, and it is quiet. I am very pleased with it so far!

Ordered to replace a laser that had started leaving a grey smear down one side of every page, and the difference in the house is the noise more than anything else. This one murmurs where the old one sounded like a kettle coming to the boil. Setup was as painless as these things get. The tanks fill through keyed bottles, the machine primes itself for a few minutes, and then it asks about wifi. Ours joined at the first attempt on the 2.4 band. Printing from phones wants the Brother app but no account, which I appreciated more than I expected to. Quality is better than I expected from a tank machine. Text is crisp enough for anything official, colour on plain paper is a little flat but perfectly respectable, and photos on proper paper are far better than they have any right to be. Duplex is slow but it works every single time. The only thing I would change is that display!

The reason we went Brother rather than the obvious alternative is the paper tray. It is a proper enclosed cassette that swallows a full ream rather than a flap on the back, so the dust stays out and nobody has to reload it every other day. Printing is quick for an inkjet and the mobile side worked without registering anything anywhere. The one oddity is how aggressively the display goes to sleep.
