Two things to weigh up before anyone puts one in a spare bedroom: it is deep, and it wants a proper run-up behind it for the rear feed if you print on art paper. Once that is sorted, the results are the best I have had out of a desktop machine, and I have had a few. Colour management is the part that surprised me. With a decent profile the screen match is close enough that soft proofing has become a formality rather than a guess. Two years in, the only clog I have had came after a month away, and one cycle cleared it. The front panel is a little touch screen that wants a stylus more than a thumb, and the roll holder is the extra you will end up buying the first time somebody asks for a panorama.

Five stars for what comes out of it, with a warning about the ink switch. There is one slot shared between photo black and matte black, and the changeover costs you ink every time, so if you mix glossy and rag papers in one session you learn quickly to sort the queue by paper rather than by client. Everything else has been faultless for me. It is quieter than the office laser sitting next to it, and the borderless output has no banding at all under a loupe.

Sits on a shelf above the desk in a spare room and earns its keep at exhibition time. Prints on baryta come off it with a depth I had been paying a lab for, and the head has not clogged once in over a year of printing perhaps a dozen sheets a month.

Bought it for a wedding business and it has quietly changed how the work gets delivered. Clients now get a print in the hand at the viewing rather than a link to a gallery, and the difference in what they order afterwards has more than covered the machine. Colour holds from the first sheet to the fortieth without me standing over it!

Came to this from a much cheaper A4 photo printer and the jump is not subtle. Skin tones stopped needing an apology, and the fine detail in dark areas that used to block up now holds together right down into the shadow. Setup was a single evening: unbox, load the carts, let it charge the lines, then a nozzle check and a test print. It found the network on the first attempt over wifi, though I have since put it on a cable, because a full A2 file over wireless takes long enough to make a cup of tea. Four months in and it has not put a foot wrong.

The reason to spend this rather than half of it is the extra inks. Violet in particular does something to skies that the cheaper machines simply cannot reach. Monochrome is the other revelation: there is no colour cast in the greys at all, which is more than my old six-ink managed on its best day.
