Bought to run a full orchestral template and it loads the lot without a hint of strain, samples and all, where the old machine used to spend ten minutes thinking about it. Round trip latency at a 64 sample buffer is stable enough that I have stopped watching the meter. The finish is the only gripe and it is a small one. The dark aluminium shows every fingerprint and a cloth lives in the bag now. Worth it for a machine that never once makes a sound!

Came to this from a desktop rig and a separate laptop, and both have gone. The whole studio now fits in a bag with an interface and a pair of headphones, which was the point. Ten months in there has been no slowdown, no fan noise, no beachballs. The speakers deserve a mention on their own, since I have mixed rough balances on them in a hotel and been surprised how well those translated back in the room the next week!

Quick, quiet and beautifully built, and there is nothing bad to say about how it works. It is heavier than I expected though, and after the first fortnight with a charger and a drive in the bag I now think twice about walking into town with it.

Everything I plugged in worked first time apart from an ancient audio interface, which needed an adapter I did not own. Otherwise it has been a straight swap, all my sessions opened without complaint and the machine has been completely silent while doing it!

Honest assessment from someone who bought the top memory option and probably should not have. It is superb, and I have never once seen it under pressure, which is exactly the problem, since the same money would have bought the middle spec and a very good pair of monitors. As a machine it is faultless. Silent, cool on the lap, brilliant screen, and the battery gets me from morning until the evening on a mix of writing and light editing. Just be honest about what you actually need before you tick the boxes.

The thing that finally sold me was sitting in a cafe next to someone with the previous generation and hearing their fans over the coffee machine. This one has never made a sound, not once, not even exporting a 90 minute stem set with everything running. Since it arrived it has taken over from the desktop entirely. Sessions that used to live on a machine in the spare room now travel with me, and the difference to how much work actually gets finished is not small. The display is bright enough to use by a window without squinting, the trackpad rejects a resting palm properly, and the hinge opens with one finger and stays exactly where you leave it. My only note is that I now feel obliged to carry it very carefully.

Sessions of 90 tracks that used to need freezing every second one now run live with every plugin open, which has changed how I work more than any interface upgrade ever did. The fans have never come on during a session, so there is nothing for the room mics to pick up. The port layout is the only awkward part. Two audio interfaces and a drive means a hub whether you like it or not, and the hub then blocks the charger on that side.

Most of my work happens on a train these days and this is the first machine that has not needed the charger before I arrive. Screen brightness is the other half of that, since a low sun through the window used to make the old panel unreadable and this one just pushes through it. Four stars only because the notch still catches my eye in some apps

Hard to fault the hardware, so the three stars are about what you get for the outlay rather than how it performs. Everything I do is instant, though almost all of it was instant on the machine before it too, and that one cost a third as much. If you are pushing enormous sessions or long video timelines the memory will earn its keep. If you are writing, mixing a handful of tracks and answering email, you are paying an enormous premium for headroom you will never touch. Worth being honest with yourself about which of those you are.
