Used for: Less than a month
Weighs less than the folder I carry with it
You will want a hub for anything older
Straight swap from an older machine, everything moved across in one evening, and the battery has yet to get anywhere near empty before I finish!
Used for: 3–6 months
The 14 inch panel is tight for two documents side by side
The size is the whole point and also the compromise. It goes in a small bag, it comes out on a train tray table with room for a coffee, and it never gets warm on the knees. Set against that, anything involving two windows side by side means squinting or an external screen
Used for: More than a year
Goes everywhere, weighs nothing
Two ports on one side only
Well over a year now and still perfect
Used for: 1–3 months
Fits in a bag that a 16 inch machine never would
Three hours of video export and the base gets properly warm
Coming from the larger model the difference in the bag is the whole story, and I have not once wished for the bigger screen when travelling. At the desk it lives on a stand with an external monitor, so the panel size only matters on the road. Sustained work is where the smaller chassis shows. A long export runs at the same speed as the 16 inch did for the first stretch, then the base gets warm and the fans finally have something to do. Nothing alarming, and it never slowed noticeably, but it is not the sealed silent box people describe if you actually push it for hours.
Used for: 6–12 months
Chose the smaller one after years of lugging a 16 inch around and it was the right call. The whole bag is lighter, the charger is smaller, and I stopped noticing I was carrying a laptop at all. What surprised me is that nothing was given up for it. The same memory, the same speed, and it holds full tilt for as long as I have asked without dropping off. Fans exist in theory. Eight months in I have heard them twice, both times exporting video while charging. Battery is the headline though. A working day of writing, mail and a pair of video calls and it is still showing more than a third left at six in the evening. The old machine needed the charger by eleven!

Small enough to work anywhere and still quick enough for anything
It has been everywhere with me since the spring before last, including two countries and a lot of very bad hotel desks, and there is not a mark on it beyond a scuff on one corner from a taxi. The hinge is as tight as the day it came, the battery still gets through a 9 hour working day, and it has never once needed a restart to sort itself out. For a machine that gets opened and shut a dozen times each day that is the part I value most.
Used for: 6–12 months
Still boots and wakes instantly
The trackpad is so wide the palm sometimes lands on it
There is nothing at all to report, which is exactly what you want. It gets opened on a train, shut in a bag mid task, and never once complains, and that is nine months of daily use.
Used for: Less than a month
The screen is far brighter outdoors than I expected
Bought it specifically to work outside in summer and it manages what no laptop I have owned has managed, which is to stay readable at a table in the sun. Not comfortable, but readable, and in shade it is genuinely pleasant. The rest has been a straight upgrade, same apps, everything quicker, and it does not heat up under the wrists. Speakers are far better than something this thin has any right to have, and they are perfectly good for a film in a hotel room!
