The office has stopped talking about the printer altogether
Quiet, quick, and it has not jammed once in a building where the last machine jammed weekly. The finisher staples a sixty-page set without complaint and the copies come off square. Nobody talks about the printer any more, which is the highest praise there is!

Everything loaded at once across three drawers
The manual is heavy going on the finishing options
Went in to replace a pair of desktop machines and it has already justified itself. Two drawers of A4, one of A3 and a bypass for card, so nothing has to be swapped over to print anything any more. Setting it up on our network was straightforward, the Macs found it through the standard driver, and scanning to email was working inside the hour. First page from cold is quick and the colour is even right across a full sheet.

Colour registration drifts, and the feeder pulls originals crooked
Two stars, and it pains me to give them, because for a year it was faultless. Since then the colour registration has slipped: fine text in colour comes out with a coloured shadow a fraction off, and running the calibration fixes it only until the machine has stood cold overnight. The other fault is the feeder, which has started pulling originals through at a slight angle, so a scanned page arrives on screen leaning. Neither is dramatic on its own, but together they make the thing hard to trust.

Proofs close enough to press that clients sign them off
The finisher makes a racket when it staples
Bought for a small design agency and the colour is the whole reason. Proofs come off it close enough to the press that clients sign them off, which has taken days out of every job. Five months in it has had one toner change and no other attention at all. The feeder scans both sides in a single pass, straight into a folder, and the text recognition is good enough to search a scanned contract afterwards. Duplex on heavy stock is slow, but it has never jammed.
Used for: 6–12 months
Does everything asked of it, at speed, and the colour has not needed touching since the day it was set up. Easily the best machine in this building!
Used for: 1–3 months
The mobile printing is what sold it to the partners. Send a document from a phone, walk to the machine, tap a card, and out it comes. No account, no app store, no fiddling about. It also means confidential work is not sitting in the tray waiting for somebody to wander past and collect it, which was the real reason we wanted it!

The page still looks exactly as it did at the start
Waste toner and the drum want attention sooner than you would think
Coming up for two years in a print room that goes easy on nothing. It has produced booklets, tender documents, laminated covers and a great deal of ordinary paperwork, and it is still turning out a page that looks the same as the day it went in. What costs it a star is the maintenance. The waste toner bottle fills faster than anyone expected, the drum wants replacing sooner than the counter suggests it should, and the machine grows increasingly insistent about both. Print quality never drops, but you spend more time with the front doors open than the brochure would have you believe.
Used for: 3–6 months
Sits in the middle of an open-plan office and does the work of the three machines it replaced. Copies are clean, colour is even, and the feeder takes a battered stack of originals without chewing any of them. The one thing that irritates is the wake-up. Press a button, and there is a pause, then a whirr, then the panel appears, and only then can you actually do anything. It is a few seconds each time, but it happens twenty times before lunch and you feel every one of them.

Utterly dependable
Toner is the only running cost, but it is not a small one
Three years of it now and it has never once let the office down, which is more than the previous two managed between them
Used for: 1–3 months
Replaced a machine everybody had learned to distrust, and the mood in the office lifted the day this one went in. Colour copies that look like the original, a panel that behaves itself, and no queue at half past four!

What lands in the tray is excellent
A laggy panel that occasionally loses an address book entry
The printing is good and I have no complaint about what lands in the tray. Everything around it has been harder work than it ought to be. The address book is the main offender. Adding a scan destination means typing on a screen that lags behind your finger, and it will occasionally lose an entry that has been sitting there for ages. We now keep a written list of the settings so whoever loses theirs next can put it back without help. Paper handling has its moments too: the A3 drawer double-feeds if it is filled right up to the line, so we load it three quarters full and it behaves. The print quality itself, though, is genuinely excellent.
