It forgets its fixed address after every power cut

Two stars because what should have been one afternoon has taken three weeks and it is still not right. The machine prints beautifully when it prints. The problem is the network side. It will not hold a fixed address through a power cut, comes back on DHCP, and every desk in the building then has a printer that has quietly stopped existing. The chap who does our IT has had two goes at it. The web interface is from another decade and half of what it offers is greyed out unless you log in as an administrator, with a password that is nowhere in the manual. If you have somebody in-house who knows Kyocera, probably fine. We do not.

The reason to buy a Kyocera is sitting in our maintenance log: in over a year the only entries are toner, toner, and a waste box. The machine before this one needed an engineer twice in its first six months. It is not the fastest thing on the market and the finisher is an extra that costs proper money, but for a small firm that prints steadily rather than in bursts it has been exactly right.

Set up on a Friday afternoon by somebody with no IT background whatsoever, meaning me, and the wizard walked through it without a single phone call. It found the wifi, printed a test page, and the driver install across five Windows machines took ten minutes in total. Since then it has done our newsletter run of 250 in colour without a hiccup and the paper still comes out cool!

The ECOSYS name is about the drum living in the machine rather than in the cartridge, which means cheap toner now and a bigger bill eventually. Fine by us, since the maths works out at roughly half what our old colour laser cost per page. Four stars because that main paper tray feels flimsy for the money

This went into a print corner in a two-storey office where the previous machine had become a standing joke. It jammed on anything heavier than 100gsm and everybody had learned to walk downstairs and print there instead. The Kyocera has not jammed. Not once, on card, on labels, on the recycled stuff that sheds fluff over everything. It has done a shade over 12,000 pages since April, including a 300-page tender that went out double-sided and stapled with about four minutes of anybody's attention. Things I would tell a buyer: it is heavier than it looks and wants two people to place, the default sleep timer is keen enough that the first page can take 25 seconds, and the mobile app is best ignored in favour of emailing things to it. None of that has cost it a star, because the job it was bought to do it does without anybody thinking about it.

Colour on this is honest. Not punchy, not oversaturated, just what the file says, which matters a great deal when you are printing a funder's logo and they will check. We put about 3,000 pages a month through it and it has asked for nothing but paper since February. The scan side deserves a mention: the feeder takes 50 sheets and does both sides in one pass, so our archive backlog finally started moving. Warming up from cold is the only slow part of the whole thing.

Runs the printing for a small college department: handouts, exam papers, the odd poster on A3. Nine months and the toner light has not come on once, which after our last machine feels like a conjuring trick. Text at 10pt is clean enough to read from the back of a lecture room without squinting.
