Three stars is a compromise between the card and the ecosystem around it. Speed is not in question: an R5 fills it with 8K RAW and the write light barely flickers, and dumping a full card takes about as long as making a coffee. What has cost me time is everything else. The camera will not always mount it after a battery swap, so you get the format prompt and a heart attack until you power cycle. Two different laptops refuse to see it through a hub, only direct. And the firmware updater is a Windows-only affair that I had to borrow a machine to run, five months into owning it, because the card would otherwise stall on long takes. Since the update it has behaved. But for this money I expected to slot it in and forget about it, not to be reading forum threads about mounting quirks on a Sunday evening.

Motorsport is where a card like this earns the money. Shooting an R3 at thirty frames a second, the buffer used to be the limiting factor and now the shutter is. Hold it down through a whole braking zone and the counter barely moves off full. It does get hot, though. After a long session in the pit lane the card is uncomfortable to hold for the first second or two, and the camera has thrown a temperature warning once. It carried on regardless, but I would not leave it recording video in the sun.

Heat is the whole of my complaint. In a Lumix S5 II shooting long-form interviews it climbs to the point where the overheat icon appears about forty minutes in, and that is in a cool room. Move the same card to a friend's Nikon and it is fine, so I suspect the body more than the card, but three stars because that combination is what I bought it for.

Came from a photography shop I trust rather than a marketplace, and after the stories doing the rounds about fake Extreme PROs that is worth saying out loud. The packaging was sealed properly, the serial checked out in SanDisk's own tool, and a full read-write pass in a card reader gave numbers within a whisker of what the box claims rather than the half speed you hear about from the dodgy ones. As for the card itself, a Z8 filled it with lossless RAW at speed and never once flashed a buffer warning. It formatted to about 476 usable, which is normal and not a fault, whatever the one-star reviews elsewhere say.
