Second phone on the same account for the youngest starting secondary school, and the deciding factor was how long it will keep getting updates. On the shorter view it is an obscene amount of money for a fourteen year old; on the longer one it will still be a working phone when she leaves.

Bought for work and claimed on the business, so the storage was the point rather than a luxury. Site photographs and video of everything we do go straight on here and stay there, and I have not had to think about space once. The blue is smarter than I expected for a work phone, though it picks up fingerprints across the back within minutes of a wipe. Signal on site has been better than the phone it replaced, which mattered more to me than any of the camera talk.

First iPhone after a long run of Androids and the transfer was less painful than I had been told. Everything came over on the wire except the two banking apps, which wanted setting up again. What has struck me most so far is how little it heats up. Half an hour of maps on the dashboard and it was still cool to hold!

Long enough with this one to be honest about it, and the honest answer is that it is a very good phone that costs more than it is worth. The camera, the screen, the speed: all excellent, none of them a reason to spend this over the plain model, which a colleague has and which does everything mine does in every situation I have compared them. Where it has genuinely earned its keep is signal. On the line home there is a stretch where every phone in the carriage drops out and this holds on to something, which after a year of commuting is worth more to me than the megapixels. Battery has aged normally, so an afternoon of heavy use now wants a plug where it once did not.

The hardware deserves five and the software has talked me down to three. A phone that costs this much should not be showing me things I have switched off twice, and the summaries of my messages have been wrong often enough that I have stopped reading them. As a piece of kit it is superb. Blue is a proper deep navy in daylight and almost black indoors, the screen is the best I have used outside, and the camera in a dim room is a generation ahead of my last one. Nine months in I still like it. I just wish it would leave me alone.
