Has replaced the tablet and the laptop for short trips
A year and a half with this as my only device, no tablet, no work laptop for anything short, and here is what that has actually been like. The good is mostly quiet. It has not slowed down. The hinge is as it was. Nothing has come unstuck at the edges of the inner screen, which was the failure everyone warned me about. The camera is the weak link and always was. It is perfectly decent in daylight and merely acceptable once the light drops, and my colleague's cheaper phone beats it in a dark restaurant every time. Battery has aged the way they all do. What was comfortably a full day is now a full day with a top-up somewhere in it, usually while I am driving. Would I buy it again? Yes, and that is with my own money rather than a company's.
Used for: 1–3 months
Replaced the paperback he carried everywhere
Heavier than a normal phone and you feel it
Bought for my husband, who had been carrying a phone and a paperback and complaining about both. He has not opened the paperback since. What I would say to anyone buying one as a present: check they are happy with the weight first. It is noticeably heavier than an ordinary phone and he keeps it in a coat rather than a trouser pocket, which took a fortnight of muttering to get used to.
Used for: Less than a month
The two screens each do a proper job
Arrives with a load of software you did not ask for
First folding phone and the first week has been a series of small surprises. The outer screen does more than I thought it would, so the thing stays shut most of the day. The inner one is where the money went and it shows: two apps at once without either being useless. Minus one star for the software rather than the phone. There is a second app store I did not ask for, a browser I will not use, and an assistant that keeps offering to help. Half an hour with the uninstall list sorted most of it.
Used for: 3–6 months
Brilliant machine, heavy pocket, and I would do it again!
Used for: More than a year
Nothing has gone wrong with it at all
The charging is slow next to newer phones
The hinge has outlasted my last two phones and the crease has not got any worse
Used for: Less than a month
Does the job of two things properly
The weight takes some getting used to
Opens to a screen I can work on, closes to a phone!
Used for: 6–12 months
Better outdoors and holds a signal where the old one did not
A small step back on the camera once the light goes
Came to this from a Pixel I had for years and the thing I most wanted to know beforehand was whether the camera would be a step back. It is, slightly, and only when the light goes. A dark pub, a candlelit table, that sort of thing: faces come out softer and the colours drift warm. In daylight there is nothing in it. Everything else has been a step forward. The screen outside is brighter, it holds a signal on the branch line where the Pixel used to give up, and the fingerprint reader on the power key is quicker than any I have used. Eight months in, the hinge is still silent and the battery is where it started.
