Superb gaming chip. Runs hotter than expected though

    Used for: 6–12 months

    Comment

Paired with a 240 AIO and 64GB of DDR5 at 6000, this has been the most trouble free upgrade I have done on AM5. The X3D cache is the whole reason to buy it and it earns the money in the right games. Anything with a big simulation running underneath, city builders, grand strategy, the flight sims, feels like it has been given room to breathe. Frame rates in shooters went up too but less dramatically, because at 1440p the graphics card runs out first. Six months on, what surprised me most is how sane it is about power. Under an all core load it pulls less than the Intel part it replaced and never wanders past the mid seventies. My case fans have not spun up in anger since I fitted it.

Used for: More than a year

    Pros

Never the bottleneck in a year

    Cons

Nothing in the box but the chip

    Comment

It has never once been the bottleneck in anything I play. Cooler is your own problem though.

  • NSNoah S.22 June 2026

Used for: Less than a month

    Pros

Big jump in lows over the 5800X3D

    Cons

Temperature spikes fast, so smooth your fan curve

    Comment

Replacing a 5800X3D and an AM4 board meant the whole platform changed at once. Boot times are shorter, the memory runs at 6000 without fuss, and in the two games I bothered to measure the average is up about a quarter with the lows up more than that. My only grumble so far is heat density. It is not that it runs hot exactly, it is that it heats up and cools down faster than anything I have had, so the fan curve needs smoothing or you get surging. Three weeks of tuning that curve and I have it about right now.

  • JDJack D.21 June 2026

    Used for: 3–6 months

    Pros

Excellent in games, if you can justify the price

    Comment

It does what it says on the tin for gaming. Where I have landed on four stars rather than five is value. The gap to the cheaper X3D part is a lot of money for a difference I mostly cannot see at 1440p, and I say that as someone who went looking for it in the frame time graphs.

  • MNMaya N.9 June 2026

Used for: More than a year

    Comment

The processor itself has been faultless, so the four stars are about the platform rather than the chip. AM5 boards that can properly feed a part like this are not cheap, and neither is the cooler you have to add, so the real spend was well beyond the ticket price. Worth it in the end, but budget honestly.

  • LKLeo K.7 June 2026

    Used for: 6–12 months

    Pros

Completely stable from the first boot, nine months without a crash

    Cons

The games where the cache pays off are fewer than you think

    Comment

This is a very good processor that I am not sure I needed. Start with what is good. It is fast, it is efficient for what it delivers, and on an AM5 board with a decent memory kit it has been completely stable from the first boot. No crashes, no odd behaviour after a chipset driver update, nothing. Eight months of that now. The catch is that the games where the cache matters are a narrower set than the reviews suggest. In a shooter at high refresh you will see it. In a simulation you will see it. In most other things, at anything above 1080p, you are watching your graphics card work while the processor coasts. I ran the numbers against a friend's cheaper eight core part and the gap in half our shared library was inside the margin of error.
