We put a deed box through it on the first afternoon, foolscap, treasury tags, tissue paper and all. It stopped politely on every double feed instead of chewing anything, which is what the ultrasonic sensor is for and why a solicitors' office buys this rather than a desktop machine.

Bought to clear an insurance broker's basement and it has not missed a beat since. Mixed batches are where it earns the money: a claim file is a passport photocopy, a few sides of typing, a folded schedule and a till receipt, and it takes the lot in one pass without being asked to think about it. Duplex is genuinely one pass, both sides, no second run. A year in and the only part we have changed is a set of rollers, which took about a minute with the little diagram on the lid.

The hopper takes a ream at a time and that changes how you work, because you stop babysitting it and go and do something else. A council planning file that used to be a fortnight of somebody's life went through in an afternoon and a bit!

Ten thousand pages in a normal week go through this in an NHS records team and the only maintenance so far has been wiping the rollers with the cloth that came in the box. The consumable counter tells you when the pick roller is due rather than leaving you to guess. PaperStream does the heavy lifting: blank page removal, deskew, colour dropout on the red forms, all before the file lands in the folder. The scanning is the easy part, honestly. It is the sorting beforehand that takes the time.
