Came from a Series 6 that needed the charger every single night, and the difference has reshaped how I use a watch. It is on my wrist for the whole twenty-four hours now, which means sleep tracking is continuous and the resting heart rate finally looks like a real trend rather than a set of guesses with holes in it. The screen is the other upgrade you feel daily. Cycling into low winter sun I can read the numbers without slowing down, and at night it dims far enough that turning over does not light the bedroom up. Where it falls short is the software. The numbers I care about sit three taps deep in an app that would rather show me a ring, and the trends I want to compare live on separate screens. Nine months of using it and I still have to think about where things are.

Three stars from somebody who wanted to like it a good deal more. Battery aside, the tracking has not matched what I expected at this money. The forest section of my regular run comes back drawn through the trees rather than along the path, adding 300 metres every single time. Sleep is the other one. It has me asleep while I am still reading and awake when I am not, so I have stopped looking at that screen altogether.

Charging has turned into something I do on a Sunday rather than every night, and that one change is why I would buy it again. It stays on my wrist through the night so the sleep tracking is whole, and there is still 60 per cent showing on Wednesday morning.

Sea swimming twice a week right through the winter and it has not blinked, no fogging, no water in the speaker that had not cleared itself within 2 minutes. What nobody tells you is that a neoprene strap and salt water are a poor combination if you never rinse it, and I learned that the smelly way.

Very good watch that is rather more than I needed. The tracking is superb, the battery is superb, and the case will outlast me, but I walk the dog and I swim and that is the whole of it. What I would have wanted to know beforehand is how much wrist it takes up. Under a jacket sleeve it snags going in, and it is the first thing anybody comments on.

The first proper test was the river path, 800 metres of it under a tunnel of trees, and that stretch is where every tracker I have owned goes to pieces. This came back as one continuous line down the middle of the path with no sudden jumps sideways. What costs it a star so far is the phone app. It wanted an account, then a second sign-in for the health side, then a fortnight of prompts about features I had already declined. The watch is excellent. The software wrapped around it, however, is not.
