The reason this is not five stars is the app, which is slow to find the bar and drops the connection halfway through a calibration more often than it should. Everything else is right. The sub is wireless and it paired first time, the bar recognised the telly over eARC without being asked, and the night mode is a single press rather than three menus deep. My other half can work it, which is the real test.

Straight swap for a 3.1 bar that had never really done anything above the screen. This one puts the rain and the aircraft where they belong, and the difference on an Atmos disc is not subtle. The sub is a proper cabinet rather than a token one, and it went in the alcove without booming, which surprised me. Setup ran to under a quarter of an hour, most of it waiting for the telly to notice a new device.

The sideboard is 110cm and the bar is 100, so for once something fitted without an argument. Sub tucked behind the armchair, rears on the shelves, done in an evening. Films sound like the cinema at Wandsworth now!

Wall mounted this under a 55in panel using the plate that came in the box, which was a pleasant surprise after the last bar wanted a bracket sold separately. The detachable rears clip back on at the ends and charge overnight. Height channels are there but you have to be listening for them.

Bought to replace a set of ageing towers and a receiver in a room where the cable to the rear speakers ran under a rug and had been a trip hazard for a decade. The detachable surrounds solved that in an afternoon. Nine months in and the only real annoyance is the charge cycle: if you forget to dock them, the rears are flat by Friday and you are back to a very good 5.1 bar until they top up.

Came out of a box that also contained a wall plate, the rear docks and enough cable ties to do the job properly, which is not something I can say about most kit these days. Fitting was a two-person lift onto the plate and then nothing else. What sold my wife on it was the night mode. Kids in bed upstairs, film on downstairs, and the explosions stop rattling the floorboards while the dialogue stays where it was. We used to ride the volume knob all evening. Not any more!

The bar and the sub are excellent, and I want that on the record before the rest of this. What has worn thin is living with the detachable surrounds. In theory you dock them and forget. In practice the contacts on one of ours stopped charging reliably, so it now needs seating twice before the light comes on, and if you get it wrong you find out at the start of a film. The batteries also do not hold what they did. 18 months in, a full charge gets us through one long film rather than an evening of telly. If you are wall mounting and never intend to detach them, none of this matters and it is a five star bar. If the rears are the reason you are buying, think about it.
