Picture is everything the reviews promised and then some, so the missing star is entirely about the interface. Getting HDR looking right meant three evenings in submenus with a test disc, and the labels do not always mean what you would assume. Ten months in I have a set of presets I trust and never go in there, which is probably the real answer, but something at this price could hold your hand rather more.

First proper cinema projector after years of a lamp based box, and the difference on a 120 inch screen is not subtle. Blacks go deeper, the picture is stable from the second it lights up, and nothing needs twenty minutes to settle!

Worth saying up front what the first weekend actually involves, because the listing does not. This is a heavy box with a big lens and the centre of gravity is nowhere near the middle, so a universal bracket will not do; ours went onto a purpose made plate with four fixings into a joist. Throw distance wants working out before anything touches the ceiling. For a 120 inch image ours sits a shade over four metres back, and the lens shift gives a generous amount of room to get the geometry right without tilting the thing, which is the part that matters. Tilt it and the correction throws away resolution you have paid for. The cable run took longer than the mount. HDMI over that distance wants a decent optical lead and a spare pull string left in the conduit, because you will be going back up there one day. All that said, the first film on it was worth every hour of the faff.

Bought as the centrepiece of a room that is half cinema and half games room, and it does both better than I expected. Game mode feels immediate; I have played enough of the same shooter on a monitor to know when something is dragging, and this is not. Motion stays clean through fast panning and there is no tearing with frame matching on. Film is where it earns the money though. A 110 inch image with the lights off is close enough to a proper cinema that the family have stopped suggesting the actual one. The caveat is ambient light. With the door open and the landing light on, contrast collapses the way it does with every projector ever made, and no amount of menu fiddling brings it back. Blackout blind, dark walls, or accept that it is an evening machine.

The room was built round it, so this is a fair test: dark walls, dark ceiling, blackout blind, a 2.35 screen at just over four metres. What the money buys is a picture that finally does not fall apart in the dark half of a film. Shadow detail in the murkier scenes is there rather than crushed, and the laser means a bright HDR shot arrives instantly instead of the thing taking a breath first. Noise in eco is a soft hiss you notice between films and never during them. Heat is real, mind: the room is a couple of degrees warmer after a double bill, and if the mount sits near a downlight you will want to check the clearance. Setup took an evening with the lens memory, and I have not been into a menu since.

The thing that has changed our viewing is not the resolution at all, it is the instant start. Press the button and there is a picture: no five minute warm up, no slow dimming as a lamp ages. A year and a half of weekly film nights and it looks exactly as it did on the first evening!

Two stars, and I am well aware that is out of step with everybody else. There is a whine from ours that sits underneath the fan noise, comes and goes with no pattern I can find, and in a silent room during a quiet scene it is all I can hear. The picture itself is exactly as good as everyone says. It also takes a good while to settle to a stable brightness from cold in a cool room, which at this sort of money feels wrong to me.

The reason for this one rather than something cheaper is the motorised lens: two presets, one for 16:9 and one for scope, and moving between them is a button press, not a job. Fifteen months in, both presets still land in exactly the same place, which was the thing I worried about. Size is the catch. It is a good deal bigger than the projector it replaced and the old ceiling mount was nowhere near rated for it, so allow for a new bracket and longer cable. Once up there it is quiet enough that you forget it exists.
