Used for: Less than a month

    Pros

Six hundred gigabytes copied in a little over four minutes

    Cons

Only worth having on a Gen5 board

    Comment

Arrived, went in, formatted, and the machine has not felt the same since. The first thing I did was time a copy of the whole photo archive from the old drive, six hundred gigabytes, and it finished in a little over four minutes. That number still seems wrong when I write it down. Temperatures peaked at 58 with the board heatsink!

    Used for: 6–12 months

    Pros

Four terabytes on a single stick and no throttling

    Comment

Four terabytes on one stick meant the video archive, the projects and the games all live in the same place for the first time. Nine months of that and the drive has not once thermal throttled with the board's own Gen5 heatsink over it, though the fan on that heatsink is not silent.

    Used for: 1–3 months

    Pros

    Swallows an entire library

    Cons

Needs active cooling to hold full speed

    Comment

Massive, fast, and it swallowed an entire Steam library with room spare!

    Used for: 6–12 months

    Pros

Reads 8K raw in real time with no caching

    Comment

Bought for a colour grading rig where the drive is the bottleneck more often than the processor, and it has moved that bottleneck somewhere else entirely. Reading 8K raw off it in real time works without caching, which the previous Gen4 drive could not manage. Copying a finished project to the archive runs at over 6GB/s until the last stretch. It needs the motherboard's active heatsink to hold that, and without one I would expect a very different review.

    Used for: 3–6 months

    Pros

    Genuinely fast

    Cons

You pay dearly for the last few hundred megabytes a second

    Comment

Blisteringly quick, and blisteringly expensive. Worth it only if you actually move big files

  • MSMillie S.22 June 2026

Used for: More than a year

    Pros

    Holds around 5GB/s through a 400GB transfer

    Cons

The Gen5 heatsink fan is audible at night

    Comment

Put this in when the workstation was rebuilt and it has been the single best part of that upgrade. The job it does is holding an enormous library of camera footage that gets read and rewritten constantly. Where the old drive would start at full pelt and then sag, this one holds around 5GB/s through a 400GB transfer and only tails off right at the end. Over a year of that and the wear level sits at four per cent, which given what I put through it is remarkable. Two things to weigh up. It only makes sense on a board with a Gen5 slot, and on this board that slot has a little fan on the heatsink which whirs under load. Not loud, but in a quiet room at night you can hear it, and I did not expect to be listening to a hard drive again.

Used for: More than a year

    Comment

Still the fastest thing in the machine a year later, though the difference against the Gen4 drive beside it only shows on huge copies

  • OKOliver K.8 June 2026

Used for: More than a year

    Pros

Nothing else is quicker on a benchmark

    Cons

In ordinary use it is indistinguishable from a Gen4 drive

    Comment

On paper this is the fastest drive you can buy for a consumer board, and on paper is where most of that speed stays. In eighteen months of ordinary use, games, browsing, the occasional big export, I could not tell you the difference between this and the Gen4 drive it sits beside. Both load the same games at the same speed. The only test where it pulls away is a synthetic benchmark or a copy between two Gen5 drives, which most people will not have. Good drive, poor value unless your work genuinely needs it.
