The right trade for a box that just serves files
Random performance shows the 5400rpm spin
Bought a pair to start a new volume and they have been fine, though the 5400rpm rating is doing some heavy lifting in the marketing. Sequential writes over the network sit around 165MB/s which is perfectly adequate for backups and media, but if you are used to a 7200 drive you will feel the difference on anything random. For a machine that mostly sits there serving files, it is the right trade.

Two of them had the NAS serving files in an afternoon
Spin up is audible from across the room
Set the NAS up from scratch with two of these and the whole thing was serving files in an afternoon. Six terabytes each, mirrored, which leaves plenty of room for the photo archive and the household backups without me having to think about pruning anything for a good while yet!

DSM reports its health properly, no warning triangles
You pay a real premium for the badge
Synology's own drive in a Synology box, which is the whole reason I paid over the odds for it. No compatibility warnings, no yellow triangles in DSM, and the health reporting actually works properly rather than showing unknown. A year and a half on it has been completely uneventful. The mark down is purely the premium, because a comparable NAS drive from Seagate or WD does the same job and DSM will still run it, it just moans at you once during setup.
Used for: 3–6 months
Verified in DSM out of the box
Dropped into a DS923 and DSM recognised it as a verified drive immediately, which saved the usual dance of clicking through compatibility warnings. Quiet at idle, and the box lives on the desk!
Used for: 1–3 months
Runs cool with no extra cooling at all
Seek noise carries in a quiet room
Runs at 38 degrees in a two bay box on a shelf with no extra cooling, which is cooler than the drive it replaced by a good margin. Three months in and it has not budged.
Used for: 1–3 months
Matched the existing drive exactly
Not the cheapest route to six terabytes
Second drive for the same NAS, matched the first perfectly and the volume expanded overnight
Used for: 1–3 months
No setup drama at all
Dear for six terabytes
Went in, got verified, filled up. Nothing else to say
