The picture is exceptional, but the smart platform is not. Apps take five or six seconds to open, the home screen loads adverts before it loads my inputs, and the voice assistant activates when nobody has said anything. Not what this money should buy.

Delivered and wall mounted, so these are first impressions rather than a considered verdict, but the impressions are strong. The picture is the best I have seen in a house. QD-OLED gives you per-pixel black with colour volume that holds up as things get brighter, so a sunset does not desaturate into orange the way it does on a white OLED. Skin tones are natural without fiddling and the matte screen finish means the window opposite is invisible rather than mirrored. Gaming has been the surprise. My console runs at 4K120 and the panel accepts 165Hz from a PC, game mode drops the processing out entirely, and there is no perceptible lag between the pad and the screen. Two small notes. The set is very thin at the top and flexes if you handle it wrong, so a second pair of hands is essential for mounting. And the default picture preset needs an hour of your time to sort out.

I am struggling with the automatic brightness limiter more than I expected. On a mostly white scene, a snow field, a bright kitchen in a sitcom, the whole picture visibly dims within a second or two and then lifts again when the scene cuts. Once you see it you cannot stop seeing it. In dark material this set is untouchable, but a lot of what we watch is not dark. Four months of watching it happen and I have stopped expecting an update to change it.

I have gone back and forth on the fourth star, so here is the full picture. What it does brilliantly: contrast, colour and motion. Per-pixel lighting means no blooming anywhere, colour holds saturation at high brightness in a way white OLED cannot, and the 165Hz panel handles fast sport and console gaming without a hint of judder. The matte coating is the best implementation I have seen and it makes daytime viewing genuinely comfortable. What costs it a star: everything that is not the panel. The interface is slow and full of promotion, the settings are scattered across menus that do not group logically, and the remote has too few buttons so everything routes through the on-screen system. If you buy this, budget for a soundbar and accept that you will be using an app or a stick for most of your watching.

The thing that separates the 83 inch S95H from the OLED I had before is brightness. A sunlit room used to mean giving up. With the matte finish on this one there are no reflections at all, just a slightly flat looking black when the light is directly on it, and highlights are bright enough that HDR still reads as HDR at three in the afternoon. Audio is thin, as ever.

One Connect box keeps every cable out of the room

The One Connect box has changed how the room looks more than the picture has, which is saying something. Every source, the console, the Blu-ray player and the amplifier, plugs into a box hidden in a cupboard, and a single thin cable goes up the wall to the panel. No trunking full of HDMI leads, no cable tidy on show, and six weeks in I have still not seen a cable in the room. The screen itself is a joy. 83 inches of OLED with no visible bezel, 165Hz for the console, and a picture that looks the same from every seat in the room!
